TERRY completes fantastic hat-trick of Archery GB Grand Final titles
Liverpool (GBR) – 18 September 2011
Top 3 Recurve Men: Andrew RANDALL, Simon TERRY and Larry GODFREY
Simon TERRY is an Archery GB National Series Grand Final champion for the third year running. Chris WHITE successfully defended his title, while Lucy O’SULLIVAN and Charlotte BURGESS were crowned champions for the second time in three years.
TERRY has, without doubt, stated his claim to being the Grand Master of the National Series Grand Final—British archery's top domestic competition of the year—as he took the recurve men’s title for the third year running. But he was given a run for his money by 19-year old Andrew RANDALL.
RANDALL has had a fantastic year in the National Series, and at Speke Hall, in Liverpool, he duly ended the hopes of Larry GODFREY in the first recurve men’s semifinal, coming back from 2-0 down to see of the two time Olympian 6-2.
TERRY, who beat Alan WILLS in his semi, took a 4-0 lead, but any thoughts that RANDALL might throw the towel in against his illustrious opponent were soon ended as the 19 year old pulled it back to 4-4. But TERRY kept his nerve, finishing with a 10-8-8 to RANDALL'S 8-7-8 to complete his hat-trick of Grand Final titles.
The recurve women’s final was even tenser, as BURGESS and Alison WILLIAMSON needed a 60 seconds shoot-off to decide the title. Their match finished 5-5, twice swinging WILLIAMSON'S way, but twice BURGESS battling back to level the score, and then shooting one of her arrows closest to the middle during the dramatic minute that decided the title.
It is BURGESS'S second National Series title, having won the inaugural Final at Lilleshall in 2009. Amy OLIVER, in her first Grand Final appearance, took the bronze medal, beating defending champion Naomi FOLKARD.
In compound men WHITE proved yet again what a top class performer he is when it matters, scoring five 10s—including the winning arrow—and seven 9s to see off the challenge of Adam RAVENSCROFT in the final. Liam GRIMWOOD defeated the other losing semi-finalist Duncan BUSBY to take the bronze medal.
And O’SULLIVAN took the compound women's title for the second time in three years. After a surprisingly comfortable victory over last year’s runner-up Andrea GALES in the semifinals, she then beat defending champion Nichola SIMPSON. Rikki BINGHAM won the bronze medal.
