Becky MARTIN is the new star of British indoor archery

Teenager Becky MARTIN (photo) completed a fabulous weekend double when she added the senior GB National Indoor Women’s Recurve title to the junior championship she won 24 hours earlier.  Rikki BINGHAM, Adam RAVENSCROFT, Stuart BARBY, Steve GAMBLE and Amanda SLACK completed the roll of honour. But it was Martin’s success that caught the imagination, as she continues to establish herself as a potential GB senior international archer of the future.   The 17-year-old beat three time Olympic archer Naomi FOLKARD in a close women’s recurve final at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, fighting back from 4-2 down, and completing victory with a one arrow shoot-off.   Consolation for FOLKARD was her victory in the invitational ‘back2back’ tournament the previous day, when she beat Jeanetta BRAUN in the final. Brazilian Luis FELIPE won the men’s recurve ‘back2back’ event, beating GB Olympic archer Alan WILLS to the top prize. FELIPE, who is studying motor racing aero-dynamics at Southampton University, has now set himself the goal of representing Brazil at its home Olympics in 2016.   “That would be a dream come true,” he said, after beating WILLS in a one arrow shoot-off. “This has been an amazing experience to come here and win this title, and beat a top class archer like Alan is to do so, and everyone has made me very welcome.”  Back2back winners Naomi JONES, Naomi FOLKARD, Luis FELIPE, Adam RAVENSCROFTAdam RAVENSCROFT won both the men’s compound back2back, and the National Indoor title, beating James BINGHAM to win for the second year running.   BINGHAM’s wife, Rikki, won the women’s National Indoor compound title, with victory over Paralympic gold medallist Danielle BROWN in the final. Naomi JONES added the ‘back2back’ title to the gold medal she won at the Amsterdam Face2Face event last month.   Steve GAMBLE is the longbow champion, defeating Richard HUTCHINS to take the title. And it was a championship winning performance from Amanda SLACK in the women’s longbow event - she defeated Julie COUSINS to win her title.
