Erika JONES nominated for Athlete of the World Games award

Erika JONES set a new world record with 704 points at 50 metres in compound archery qualification to start the Cali 2013 World Games last year. The next day she picked up two gold medals: beating Croatian archer Camilla SOEMOD in the individual final, and winning the mixed team competition with United States teammate Reo WILDE.

The medals earned the current compound women’s world number one an Athlete of the Day award on the fourth day of the multi-sport event, and now JONES has been shortlisted as one of 10 candidates for the Athlete of the Year title. To win the award, she will have to overcome stiff competition, not least from the most successful athlete of the Cali Games, Marcel HASSEMEIER from Germany, who won four golds and a silver medal in Fin Swimming.

Launching the public vote for both the World Games Athlete of the Year and Team of the Year polls, President Ron FREOHLICH said the International World Games Association wanted “to celebrate the highly successful Games in Cali, which showcased outstanding performances from our sportsmen and women.”

If you think Erika JONES deserves to be the World Games 2013 Athlete of the Year, vote before the 31 January 2014 at http://www.theworldgames.org/the-sports/polls/1-athlete-of-the-year-2013.
