President to chair IOC Medical Commission

The commission’s mission is to fight against doping in sport and support the protection of athletes’ health. Composed of medical specialists, the group has studied the sport medicine, biomechanics and physiology of all sports, nutrition and related sciences.

As well as working closely with the World Anti-Doping Agency, the commission manages two postgraduate Diploma programmes on sports medicine and sports nutrition.

President of World Archery since 2005, Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER was elected to the IOC’s Executive Board at the organisation’s 126th session in Sochi earlier this year and is currently president of Turkey’s National Olympic Committee.

Prof Dr ERDENER will contribute his expertise as a respected ophthalmologist to the commission. He managed Hacettepe University’s hospitals in Ankara, Turkey before becoming rector of the institution until 2011.

“Protecting the integrity of sport is fundamental,” said Prof Dr ERDENER. “In terms of the fight against doping and ensuring that health professionals and sports organisations work in unison to provide level playing fields for competition and safeguard our athletes.”
