Swedish Archery Club Launch New Kit in Support of Sport-for-all Attitude

Nykvarns Bågskytteklubb, the largest archery club in Sweden, recently retired its light-blue shooting shirts in favour of a new rainbow-coloured uniform. The change is designed to signify the club’s commitment to offering a sport for all: including LGBT and impaired individuals, and people representing other cultures.

The move echoes that of one of Sweden’s hockey clubs – Kiruna – which made a similar move in order to raise awareness of LGBT issues in and around Sweden.

One of the recommendations in Olympic Agenda 2020, all of which were unanimously accepted by the International Olympic Committee at the end of last year, was to strengthen the sixth Fundamental Principle of Olympism by including non-discrimination on sexual orientation.

The proactive attitude of Nykvarn archery club puts that principle in action.

The community of Nykvarn lies 50km south of Stockholm and is famous for its Biscuit Castle – Taxinge Slott – and is widely recommended by travel writers as a place to visit.

Archery is growing in Sweden. World Archery Sweden’s junior membership has increased by around 40 percent over the past two years with a nearly-even split between new youth boys and girls joining.
