Schloesser wins his first indoor event of the season
World number three Mike Schloesser converted his top seeding into the compound men’s gold medal at the second stage of the 2017/18 Indoor Archery World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand – his first major win of this indoor season – off the back of three consecutive perfect round.
He beat Yup Pui Lam, Spanish archer Alberto Blazquez and David Houser each with 150-point 15-arrow match scores.
Mike then beat Tate Morgan, 148-147, before taking out second-ranked archer Kris Schaff in the gold medal match, 149-147.
“I was pretty sure when I came here that my shooting was good and this proves it. I’ve been shooting pretty good this indoor season already and this is a nice win to add to the list,” said Schloesser.
“After a really good last indoor season I went outdoors and things didn’t go my way. I expected way more than I got. I think I had a bit of bad luck and I’m hoping I don’t have it next year.”
Mike goes into the year-end break with a house to decorate and a few days of rest on his mind – with over a month before the international circuit picks up again for stage three in Nimes, France.
He’ll arrive at that event as a top ranked archer on the road to the Indoor World Cup Final in Las Vegas, as will Paige Pearce-Gore in the compound women’s event after adding victory in Bangkok to the silver medal she earned in Marrakesh at stage one.
Pearce-Gore and Sarah Sonnichsen were neck-and-neck until the last arrow of their final. The former shot a 10 to finish, the latter a nine.
Matteo Fissore made his second consecutive recurve men’s final on the tour, but lost gold in Thailand to Korean pro Kim Bongman, 6-4. The Italian indoor specialist maintained his lead in the rankings, though.
The recurve women’s final came down to two athletes from professional team Hyundai Mobis in Sim Yeji and Kim Surin. Sim shot three of five perfect sets to take the match, 6-4.
Sim and Olympic silver medallist Aida Roman, stage one’s victor, share the pole position in the leaderboard after two stops.
The second stage of the 2017/18 Indoor Archery World Cup took place in Bangkok, Thailand on 1-3 December 2017.
