Preview: Iraq offers world ranking points at Asia Cup Stage 2

After topping the medal table at Stage 1 in Bangkok, Bangladesh will be looking to repeat their continental success at Stage II in Iraq which starts with qualification on Saturday (7 May).

Bangladesh are sending a team of 12 to Sulaymaniyah for the event. It includes the two top world-ranked recurve individuals: Ruman Shana in the men (world rank: 42) and Diya Siddique in the women (95).

They will be joined in Iraq by the two top-ranked compound individuals - India’s Rishabh Yadav (66), who won silver in Bangkok, and Kazakhstan’s Viktoriya Lyan (76).

Yadav is part of India’s team of 16 archers who sit one selection level below the official team selection for the first three stages of the 2022 Hyundai Archery World Cup.

Rain and thunderstorms have been forecast for practice ahead of qualification, making way for hot and sunny conditions for the remainder of competition in Sulaymaniyah with umbrellas an essential item for an archer to pack for both types of weather.

What’s the story? With confirmation this morning that the 2022 Asian Games, originally to be held in China this September, will be postponed to a later date, the continent’s best will have to reset their focus and now solely  go for the world ranking points on offer, rather than continue on their set path towards the prestigious multi-sport event.

106 athletes from 16 countries will be competing in Iraq.

Archers have registered from Bangladesh, India, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan.

Competition at the world ranking event in Sulaymaniyah starts with qualification on Saturday.
