Denmark’s Mathias Fullerton topped the compound men’s list after qualification at the Walbrzych-Ksiaz 2025 European Field Championships on Wednesday.

Archers shot a 24-target unmarked round in the forests of Ksiaz on Tuesday 16 September, followed by a 24-target marked round on Wednesday 17. The combined scores seeded them for the individual, team and mixed team events, with the top 16 progressing in each category.

After two days, Fullerton – runner-up at the recent Gwangju 2025 Hyundai World Archery Championships – tied with Slovenia’s Aljaz Matija Brenk on 831 points. The Dane secured the number-one seed with a higher six-count. Former world 3D and field champion Nico Wiener was third with 829, in a tight leaderboard where just 11 points separated the top eight.

Great Britain’s Ella Gibson dominated compound women’s field, leading with 819 points – a full 18 ahead of Amanda Mlinaric.

Another British archer, Patrick Huston, managed an impressive second in recurve men despite not having his bow due to an airline mishap. In the most recent of a long line of similar incidents where the archery peleton have supported each other, he borrowed spare equipment from Germany’s Felix Wieser, who himself qualified fifth. Italy’s Matteo Borsani, the reigning World Games Champion, topped the group with 756.

The 2023 World Archery Champion Marie Horackova of Czechia led the recurve women with 711, just ahead of Bryony Pitman in second. Pitman, who has stepped back from international target events, continues to compete in field and was one of several British archers posting strong results – enough to place Great Britain into three gold medal team finals on Friday.

In barebow, World Games Champion Simone Barbieri of Italy led the men with 705, narrowly ahead of Spain’s Cesar Vera Bringas on 704. Italy’s Cinzia Noziglia unsurprisingly topped the women with 659, heading a clean sweep alongside teammates Eleonora Strobbe and Alessandra Bigogno for an Italian one, two, three.

Competition continues with individual matches tomorrow.
