Preview: Schloesser and Fullerton still the men to beat
From 2019 onwards, every winner of the Hyundai Archery World Cup Final in the compound men’s category was either Mike Schloesser or Mathias Fullerton – until last year, when James Lutz somehow edged ahead of both of them.
Mikey won three consecutive editions between 2019 and 2022. But when Mathias finally toppled him from the world number one spot last month, it felt like something had shifted at the very top. And with Lutz not returning to defend his title this year, the door is open once again.
Could Nicolas Girard, the new World Archery Champion, spring a surprise and beat them both? Based on his results this season, it seems entirely possible.
Finals for the compound men in Nanjing begin at 14h00 (local) on Saturday 18 October. Live stream with a subscription to archery+.
Line-up
The top two seeds are listed in bold and will be placed at opposite ends of the bracket. A match draw will determine the positions of the remaining archers.
- Mathias Fullerton, Denmark (stage winner, world number one)
- Mike Schloesser, Netherlands (double stage winner, world number two)
- Nicolas Girard, France (stage winner, reigning World Archery Champion)
- Ding Yiliang, China (host nation)
- Emircan Haney, Türkiye
- Rishabh Yadav, India
- Michea Godano, Italy
- Kim Jongho, Korea
Bold prediction
The only time Mikey and Mathias have faced each other outdoors this season was in Antalya, where Schloesser edged a 158-157 win before losing in the next round to Italy’s Michea Godano – also in the Nanjing line-up this week.
It’s hard to read too much into that single match given the current stratospheric level of both archers. While Fullerton’s rise to world number one is a symbolic breakthrough, it’s worth remembering that Schloesser has won two World Cup stages and the World Games title this year – all while adjusting to life as a new parent.
Girard’s victory at the Gwangju 2025 Hyundai World Archery Championships, combined with his stage win in Antalya, proves that he’s more than capable of taking the title. His average arrow score this season is actually higher than both Fullerton and Schloesser.
It’s difficult – but not impossible – to imagine someone else pulling off a surprise win. Rishabh Yadav has podiumed twice at World Cups this year and has the form to capitalise if one of the favourites falters. And you can never entirely discount Kim Jongho, either.
One thing is certain: this will be a massive final, likely decided by a single point. Expect fireworks.
