Italy's Paolo Tonon has reclaimed the world record in the Men’s W1 (rec/com) category, with the highest score recorded at 18 metres now at 589.

Paralympic bronze medallist Tonon broke Paris 2024 Paralympic Games champion Jason Tabansky’s 587 — which was only set one year ago — in the qualification round at the annual Indoor Para-Archery Italian Championships in the city of Lamezia Terme.

The 36 year old compounder had previously held the record in Men's W1 before Tabansky when he set it at 582 two years ago, again at the Italian Indoor Championships.

Representing his club, Gruppo Sportivo Paralimpico Difesa, Tonon shot an astonishing 50 10s out of 60 arrows in qualification but could not maintain that form in the matches, missing out on the gold medal to 2023 European para champion Maurizio Panella, 147–146.

Still, Tonon was more than satisfied with the result.

“It's definitely a good way to start 2026,” said Tonon. “This year, I've been preparing to perform well at the Italian Championships, and I'm really happy to have reclaimed this world record.

In the last two months, I've competed indoors, but I wasn't able to shoot as well as I wanted. I always demand a lot from myself, and in the final weeks before the Championships, I was shooting well, confident in my shot, but I knew that to set the record, I'd have to be almost perfect.

I was able to carry over what I'd done in recent training sessions into the competition.
