The Pan American Youth and Masters Championships returns Sunday for its third edition with its largest field yet, as 271 athletes from 16 nations converge on Medellín, Colombia, for five days of competition spanning four age categories and three disciplines.

Competition will be held at the permanent archery facility within the Unidad Deportiva Andrés Escobar. The venue has hosted seven Hyundai Archery World Cup stages over the past 13 years, along with several Pan American Championships and World Ranking Events, cementing Medellín's reputation as one of the sport's most experienced host cities in the Americas.

The event — open to U15, U18, U21 and 50+ archers competing in recurve, compound and barebow — has grown steadily since its inaugural standalone edition in Halifax, Canada, in 2022, when 139 athletes from 10 countries competed. The 2024 edition in San Salvador drew 234 athletes from 21 countries. This year's field of 271 represents a new high-water mark for the championship.

Host nation Colombia fields the second-largest team with 44 competitors — 22 men and 22 women — while the United States leads all nations with 48 archers. The youngest American on the roster is 13-year-old Tucker Craig; the oldest is Rick Stonebraker, who turns 76 on May 22 — the very day archers begin arriving in Medellín. The range between them illustrates what makes this event unique: It is one of the few international competitions where teenagers shooting their first international match and masters athletes with decades of experience share the same shooting line on the same day.

When the USA last competed at this championship, in El Salvador two years ago, it finished at the top of the medals table with 12 gold, eight silver and four bronze. Twenty total reigning medallists are back in Medellín looking to repeat — among them Tatyana Muntyan of the US Virgin Islands, who set a championship record and an Americas record in the 60-metre qualifying round in 2024, then went on to set a world record in the recurve 50+ mixed team event alongside teammate Bruce Arnold with a score of 1228.

Also returning is Colombia's Andrés Hernandez, who won recurve U21 men gold in El Salvador and went on to compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics Games later that year.
