Former National Archery Association president and judge emeritus Donald Marcure has died at the age of 83.

Born in Rhode Island (USA) on 17 March 1943, Marcure spent decades in archery as an athlete, administrator, team manager, judge, and director of shooting, holding senior roles in the United States and internationally.

He served on the board of governors of the National Archery Association – now USA Archery – before becoming its president, as well as serving on several committees of FITA, now World Archery.

A certified international judge, Marcure officiated at numerous world championships and became an accomplished director of shooting. He judged at the 1983 World Archery Championships in Long Beach (USA) before serving as director of shooting at the Los Angeles 1984 Olympic Games.

His contribution to international judging was recognised in 2010, when the then-FITA Judge Committee awarded him the honorary title of judge emeritus.

Marcure also managed the USA archery team at major international competitions, including the 1987 World Archery Championships in Adelaide (Australia), where Jay Barrs won individual bronze one year before becoming Olympic Champion in Seoul (Korea).

Barrs paid tribute to a man he had known through many different sides of the sport.

“For those of us who have been in archery long enough to have known Don, know archery has lost a great deal with his passing,” he said.

“I was fortunate enough to have known him in the many roles he found in archery, and regardless of the role he was fulfilling at the time, his love for archery and desire to make it a better sport for everyone, from beginners to international champions, was undeniable.”

Marcure died on 3 August 2026.
