Ecuador tops medal table on home soil at South American Youth and Masters Championships

Host nation Ecuador won 47 medals at at the Makarios Archery Sports Club.

Host nation Ecuador topped the medal table at the Daule 2026 South American Youth and Masters Open Championships on Sunday with 47 medals — 13 gold, 13 silver and 21 bronze — as four days of competition concluded at the Makarios Archery Sports Club.

Brazil finished second with 22 medals, including 12 gold, eight silver and two bronze. Chile placed third with 16 medals — five gold, five silver and six bronze — while Colombia was fourth with 10.

The most anticipated rematch of the week finished with an Ecuadorian victory, as Blanca Maritza Rodrigo Bueno defeated Chile's reigning champion Aurora Olea Prado 145-144 in Friday's compound U21 women's Open final. The top seed Rodrigo Bueno beat Olea Prado again in Sunday's South American Championship final to reverse the result of their 2025 meeting in Santiago.

Nahomi Rodrigo Bueno added South American Championship bronze for the hosts, edging Chile's Catalina Victoria Torres Leiva in a shoot-off after the pair finished level on 138. Torres Leiva had claimed Open bronze two days earlier with a 139-130 victory over Ecuador's Dana Victoria Navarrete Vargas.

The compound U18 men's rivalry between Ecuador and Chile ended in a split. Top seed Matias Joaquin Avila Barrera beat reigning champion Oscar Omar Enrique Verdugo Viñales 143-138 for Open gold, before the Chilean answered in the South American Championship final with a 143-140 victory to retain his continental title.

Chile's Ángel Moises Vega Valdivia swept both recurve U21 men's titles.

Chile's Ángel Moises Vega Valdivia swept both recurve U21 men's titles. The reigning Open champion survived a shoot-off against Ecuador's Juan Pablo Peralta Alvarez in the Open semifinals before beating Brazil's Eduardo Diamantino 7-1 for gold, then defeated Diamantino again, 6-0, for the South American Championship crown.

Peralta Alvarez left Daule with bronze in both individual events and gold in the recurve U21 mixed team, where he and Brianna Elizabeth Torres Velez defeated Chile 5-3 in the semifinals and top-seeded Brazil 6-2 in the final.

Peru's Alexandra Zavala Tagata produced the upset of the women's recurve competition, beating top seed Sophia Medeiros of Brazil in both recurve U21 women's finals, 6-2 in the Open and 6-4 in the South American Championship. The two golds were Peru's only medals of the championships.

Brazil's Luiza Langone was one of two archers to win three gold medals. Six months after beating a top seed for gold at the South American Youth Games in Panama, she did so again in Daule, defeating Colombia's Juana Cardona Gaviria 6-4 in the South American Championship recurve U18 women's final. Langone had already taken Open gold with a 6-2 victory over Chile's Alejandra Ignacia Bravo Peña, and she paired with Pedro Pesso Da Rocha Guerra Portes to beat Colombia 5-3 in the recurve U18 mixed team final.

Cardona Gaviria, the Open top seed, fell in the quarterfinals of that event to eighth-seeded Nillyen de los Angeles Rodriguez Morffe of Bolivia.

Colombia's Cristobal Giraldo Rios won three golds.

Colombia's Cristobal Giraldo Rios matched Langone's three golds. He won both recurve U18 men's individual titles, leading an all-Colombian Open podium, and was part of the Colombian trio that beat Ecuador for recurve U18 men's team gold.

Ecuador's depth in compound accounted for much of its medal haul. The hosts swept every podium place in compound U18 women and compound U15 women across both the Open and South American Championship, with Dariana Isabel Heredia Sanchez and Diana Gangotena Rodriguez each winning two titles. Mateo Israel Fierro Boada led another Ecuadorian sweep in the South American Championship compound U15 men's event, while Alessia Mijanow Rubira Guerra won both recurve U15 women's titles.

Brazil's Rafael Magalhães, who posted the highest qualification score of the week, won both compound U21 men's titles, leading a Brazilian sweep of the Open podium.

Among the masters, Brazil claimed both recurve 50+ titles through Moisés Guimarães and Fabiola Dergovics, who each won the Open and South American Championship events. Colombia's Gildardo Anselmo Fuentes, the defending Open champion, took silver in both recurve 50+ men's finals.

Marcelle Artamonoff won both compound 50+ women's titles for Brazil, and Vanderlei Dantas claimed South American Championship gold in compound 50+ men. Dantas fell one point short in the Open final, where Costa Rica's Carlos Salas Rodríguez won 140-139. Costa Rica collected a second gold through Yhorman Morales Fuentes in compound U15 men.

In barebow, Ecuador's Franklin Hernan Lopez Guerrero won the combined Open 50+ and U21 men's event from the fourth seed, while compatriot Jorge Ulpiano Proaño Ruiz beat Lopez for the South American Championship barebow 50+ men's title.
