Archers shoot qualifications and mixed team eliminations in Cordoba
Cordoba – 6 July 2012
Archers shot the qualification rounds and the mixed team elimination rounds all the way to the bronze medal matches yesterday at the World Archery University Championships in the hot and sunny Cordoba. The bronze medals went to Spain in recurve and Mexico in compound.
Recurve
The Korean team dominated both the men’s and women’s recurve qualifications. JIN Jeawang ended up in first place with 677 points, outscoring his closest competitor Thomas AUBERT (FRA) by 10 points. In third was the Japanese Irokuni SATO. On the women’s side, the best shooter of the day was JANG Eunbin, followed by two Korean teammates and two archers from the Chinese Taipei.
Compound
Paul TITSCHER (GER) was the highest-scoring archer with 697 points. The young Tristan SKARVAN (USA) seemed pleased after topping the women’s ranking with 686 points. The USA finished first of the team ranking on the men’s side ahead of Italy and Mexico. The U.S. women were first as well, followed by Korea.
Mixed Team Eliminations
The mixed team eliminations were shot all the way to the bronze medal finals. In recurve, the bronze medal final featured the Italians Silvia MATTEUCCI / Massimiliano MANDIA against the Spanish pair of Helena FERNANDEZ / Antonio FERNANDEZ. The host nation won the bronze with a 9-6 victory in the Academic Round. The gold medal final will be between Korea (JIN Jeawang / JANG Eunbin) and Poland (Paula WYCZECHOWSKA / Alexsander MICHALSKI). The No. 6 seed Poland qualified after fighting a close quarterfinal match against the No. 3 seed France that ended in a tie (2-1, 4-4, 5-5, 7-7). Two shoot-offs were needed before Poland finally made the difference.
In the compound division, Mexico (Martha Cecilia HERNANDEZ DE LA GARZA / Gerardo ALVARADO) won the bronze medal over Malaysia, 6-5. The gold medal match will be shot in the final day of competition by the German pair of Kristina BERGER / Paul TITSCHER and the American double Tristan SKARVAN / Daniel SUTER.
