Leipzig “LIVE” – Recurve Women Elimination Matches
Leipzig – 12 July 2007
Today archery fans could follow LIVE reports of the Recurve division archers who were competing in the elimination matches. Five rounds were contested at the Festwiese this Thursday starting with the Women in the morning.
Besides World Championships medals, the Recurve archers were fighting to win places for next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing. For that, they needed to be at least among the 16th best ranked archers in their category here in Leipzig, but this depends on the team results. 1st round: Schuh (FRA) – Ruiz (PUR) Seed no. 5 Schuh led in the first end of her first match on a score of 57-53. In the second end, Schuh shot two 8s, 9s, and one 10 to continue to the next bracket with a final score of 109-105. 1st round: Curelar (ROU) – Folkard (GBR) The match was tied after the first six arrows with a score of 56 on each side. Curelar could not take the pressure and shot two bad 7s and one 6 to finally give the victory to the British archer. Total score: 109-97. 1st round: Williamson (GBR) – Nikitin (BRA) Williamson got in trouble in her first match with a score of 52-53 after the first six arrows. The British archer could only achieve 9-9-8-8-7-10 in the second end for a total of 103. However, her opponent shot a very bad 4 that cost her the match. Final score: 103-102. Nikitin said: “It was a good match. I was a little nervous for my first World Championships and it is a good experience to play such a good archer like Alison. There was some wind, I had to wait to shoot and my fore arm started to shake This is why I shot a 4.”
2nd round: Choi (KOR) – Berzina (LAT) No. 3 seed Choi was behind the Latvian archer (ranked 67th in the qualifications!) after six arrows with a score of 56-58. However, Berzina fell apart in the second end, scoring 8-7-6-9-8-8. Choi came back strongly with a 10-10-8-10-8-9 to win the match 111-104. It is worth noting that both archers had to wait a long time to shoot their 5th arrow because of the rising wind.
2nd round: Waller (AUS) - Hayakawa (JPN) The 2006 Cadet Outdoor World Champion Waller was a long way behind the 2007 Indoor World Champion Hayakawa with a score of 51-56 after six arrows. The Australian could not come back and lost the match 100-112.
2nd round: Kaya (TUR) – Folkard (GBR) It was a tight match. Folkard started with 10-9-9-9-8-8 for 54 points, while Kaya shot 7-9-9-9-8-10 for 52 points. In the second end, both archers seemed to suffer from the wind and Folkard finished with a bad 3, for a total of 101 points. Fortunately for the British archer, Kaya shot a miss in her ninth arrow (!) and only achieved 93 points.
2nd round: Schuh (FRA) - Romantzi (GRE) Schuh was leading 54-52 at the half-way mark. She waited until the last 60 seconds to shoot her last three arrows and still managed a second end of X10-8-X10-8-10-9 to clinch the match 109-106.
3rd round: Schuh (FRA) – Nichols (USA) The wind kept rising and kept changing direction. Schuh got into trouble and was losing 51-54 half-way. The French archer reacted well, shooting 9-10-9, but could not hold it until the end, finishing with 8-8-6. Because of the wind Nichols waited until the last 90 seconds to shoot her last five arrows. She still managed it to finish with 8-8-9-9-8-9 and clinched the match 105-101.
3rd round: Markcinkiewicz (POL) – Berezhna (UKR) Berezhna was leading 54-50 after six arrows. She continued well in a second end of 9-8-9-9-8-8. 3rd round: Guo (CHN) – Tonetta (ITA) Guo started well with 9-8-9-8-8-X10 for a total of 52. Tonetta was also shooting well except for a 6 with her third arrow; she was losing 49-52 at that time. She could not recover from this handicap, shooting five 8s in the second end. Finally, Guo clinched the match 101-93. Tonetta said: “I was a little nervous, and I couldn’t understand why all my arrows were on the left side of the target. I am sorry for my first end and couldn’t come back later on.”

1/8 round: Guo (CHN) – Valeeva (ITA) Guo started the match with a 5, and although she did well following with 10-9-8-8-10, she only achieved 50 for the first end. Valeeva was not much better earning 52 points. However, the Italian worked twice as hard in the second end scoring 10-X10-9-9-10-10. This was too much for Guo, who could only achieve 9-9-8-X10-8-8. Valeeva clinched the match 110-102.
