Mexico wins three individual titles at Mexican Grand Prix
Lausanne - 19 April 2006
Arminda Bastos (MEX)
Mexico won three out of four individual gold medals at the Mexican Grand Prix, the second world ranking tournament in the Americas.
World Championships silver medalist Arminda Bastos won the women's compound event with a close victory over team-mate Almendra Ochoa. The bronze medal went to the top ranked archer in the qualification round (1363) Venezuela's Luzmary Guedez.
The Men's compound division ended with 114-112 victory for Mexico's Armando de la Garza, who ranked fourth at the world championships in Madrid 2005. The silver medal went to Jorge Jimenez (El Salvador). The winner of the qualification round (1385) Ruben Ochoa of Mexico won the bronze medal.
The biggest surprises came in the recurve division. US top archers Jennifer Nichols and Victor Wunderle won the qualification round with scores of 1346 and 1318 respectively, but fail to win a medal in the match round. Jennifer lost her quarter final match versus Denise Van Lamoen (Chile) in a two-arrow shoot off. Jennifer's younger sister Amanda Nichols won the gold medal beating Erika Reyes (MEX) in the final match. Van Lamoen won the bronze medal.
