Goncharova and Kazantseva for a replay of World Cup Final
Ulsan – 6 April 2007
The day in Ulsan has started in perfect weather conditions for the archers shooting in the individual semi-finals of the 2007 Archery World Cup Stage 1. The wind is not as strong as it was in the past few days. This morning’s matches decided which archers would shoot for Gold in the afternoon and which would fight for the bronze medals.
Sofia Goncharova (RUS)
In the Compound Women category it will be the two Russian Goncharova and Kazantseva who will be facing each other for the first title of the year in a replay of the final in Mexico last year. Kazantseva was opposed to the surprising Iranian Akram in her semi-final. The Russian archer led all the way through and clinched the match with a 6-point difference (113-107).
The defending World Cup champion Goncharova appeared the strongest this morning shooting 116 out of a possible 120 points in her match to the Indonesian Kusumaniah (107). It is to be noted that she scored as high a score as the best male archer of the morning, Jimenez of El Salvador.
The semi-finals continued with the Compound Men where Jimenez was very solid (116) against Van Zutphen from the Netherlands who had a good match with a total of 113. The second match of this category between L. Wilde (USA) and Zamaninejad (IRI) was the tightest of all. Both archers finishing their 12 arrows with a 115-point score, they needed three additional shoot-off arrows to decide the one who will be shooting in the Gold medal of the afternoon.
Jorge Jimenez (ESA)
After the two archers both shot two 10s, it was Logan who released his last arrow first shooting “only” 9. This left the Iranian with his destiny at hands –a 9 would tie and a 10 would win! Proving he was strong in his head and yesterday’s victory in the team event way no piece of luck, Zamaninejad shot a perfect last arrow to claim a place in the gold medal match.
The Recurve Women semi-finals featured two 100% Korean matches. First seed Choi E.Y. overcame her compatriot and Shanghai 2006 World Cup winner Yun O.H. in a match that was still tied mid way through (54-54). The final score was 110-105.
The second match of this category was very close between team-mates Park S.H. and Lee T.Y. As the match was tied after the regular four ends (113-113), the two Koreans needed three additional arrows to decide the winner. Reigning Olympic Champion Park finally clinched the match shooting a 10 while her opponent scored an 8.
This afternoon Recurve Men gold final will be between team-mates of Chinese Taipei Kuo C.W. and Wang C.P. The first named archer defeated last male representative of the host country Im D.H. totalizing 113 points in this semi-final to 111 for his opponent.
The last semi-final of the morning was another tied match (111-111) between Wang and Russian Tsyrempilov. But this time, only one arrow was necessary to decide between the two archers shooting a low 8 while Wang scored a 9.¨
