Epreuve Test Olympique – Réactions du Jour 6 – Eliminations Classique Hommes Beijing – 24 août 2007   Recurve Men   Commentaires en anglais de WAN AB AZIZ Mohd K après sa défaite contre CHENG Chu Sian en 1/16 de finale individuel vendredi.   WAN AB AZIZ Mold K (MAS) - Archer On his performance: “I don’t feel good. Because my score was lower than my team-mate. Not good. I could have performed better.”   On competing against his team-mate: “We know each other very well. I didn’t feel any pressure from him.”   On preparation for getting the third place for 2008 Olympic Games: “Yes, we have been doing some preparation. Right now I’m doing more training. And I will try to get the qualification in the Asian Championships in September.” CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) - Archer On the feeling of competing against his team-mate: “It wasn’t the first time I have competed with my team-mate. I didn’t take it as a competition, but training. It’s good to have his company. However, it was still not very relaxed for me. I tried to control myself and score as much as I could.”   On the weather: “It’s much better than the other days. The wind is not so strong.”   On what he learned most from this test event: “It’s very important to experience the weather here. It’s hotter in Malaysia than it is in Beijing, and the wind isn’t so important in my own experience, so the heat and the wind don’t affect me much.” WUNDERLE Victor (USA) - Archer On defeat to Simon TERRY:” "I felt relaxed today. I tried and I shot well. But Simon shot better."   On whether it is habit to go through the motion of shooting before actually shooting: “Sometimes I do that, and it helps me shoot well.”   On the communications with his coach after each end: “He gives me some suggestions and tries to make me shoot better.”   On whether he would choose a heavier bow if he could: “Yes, maybe because heavier bows shoot faster arrows.”   On whether he prepared for the test event: “A little bit. I travelled (to different competitions) a lot before the test event.” TERRY Simon (GBR) – Archer: On the match: “There are only 12 arrows in the Olympics (individual elimination rounds), you could shoot six good arrows and luckily get 60(points). What happens in this 12-arrow round is such a tight thing, and a two-point victory is nothing. I just relaxed and got the chance.”   On how does he usually deal with an opponent of similar age and world rank (TERRY is 33 years old and currently ranks 13th in the world. WUNDERLE is 31 years old and ranks 24th): “I just try to keep each match separate, and do the best I can do. And though everyone is a bit nervous in the match, you just relax yourself as best you can.”   On whether he will achieve a medal after his team came away with nothing in the team event (Great Britain lost to Poland in the first round, 200-222): “I’d like to, but I’ll just take every match as it comes. Just relax and shoot good arrows. I have no idea how far I will go in this tournament.” SERRANO Juan Rene (MEX) - Archer On the performance: “Yes, shooting 4 X-rings, I am satisfied with my performance though I lost this match. There is always the winner and loser in archery and that happens in any competition. I am happy because I shot well during these days despite the tricky wind which has hardly affected me.”   On the coming continental qualification competition: “I am looking forward to participating in the continental qualification championships (Olympic Festival, San Salvador) held this October. Except the usual training, I will try to attend a variety of competitions to get prepared for that in the next one and a half months, and this Good Luck Beijing International Tournament is part of my preparation. I came here to get accustomed to the facilities and the summer heat, so that I can be familiar with all of these for next year.  I really hope I can earn the qualification for the Beijing Olympic Games and I will work on it.” Simon TERRY (GBR)    JIANG Lin (CHN) - Archer On the crowd: “Pretty good! At least there’s a (home) win.”   On the two opponents, MORIYA Ryuichi (JPN) in the first round & SERRANO Juan Rene (MEX in the 1/16 Elimination: “To be honest I am pretty aware that he (SERRANO Juan Rene) is better than I am, so the pressure is not on me. I don’t get nervous at all. Regarding the Japanese archer, I don’t know why, but I was really exited to compete against him!”   On the Chinese men’s team at this tournament: “Well we are not as strong as a team.”   On his ideal personal performance: “My ideal performance would have to be when winning is guaranteed and defeat only comes by accident.”   On the individual qualification for the 2008 Olympics and his individual goal: “Well we have a qualification round in March next year (to select 6 out of the potential archers to represent China who as the host nation is automatically granted 6 positions for the Olympic archery competition next year.). My goal for the Olympics? It’s the same as all of the athletes.” JOHNSON Richard (USA) - Archer On whether age is a problem in archery: “I hope not! (Richard JOHNSON is 52 years old.)”   On today’s performance: “Terrible. I didn’t shoot well, especially in the first end.”   On the test event: “I didn’t prepare a lot before this test event, but it will be different in next year’s Olympic Games, I will train a lot more.”   On the plan to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games: “Our team has already qualified for that, (USA qualified a men’s team at the Leipzig World Cup) but I haven’t. (The USA will hold internal trials to select the archers for the Olympic team next year).”   LEE Chang Hwan (KOR) - Archer On whether he played a relaxed match: “Because I am playing matches under the reputation and hope of Korea, I felt nervous to some extent.”   On whether he is satisfied with the score of 113 points: “The score is not bad, but it’s only what I often shoot in training.” DOBROWOLSKI Rafal (POL) - Archer On his performance: “Yes, I’m really very satisfied. It was a fierce match and I won it!”   On how much he knew about his opponent: “I don’t know him! Maybe I felt a little pressure from him, because he also shot very well.”   On his preparation for qualifying for his individual place in the Poland team for the 2008 Olympic Games: “I hope I can (qualify). I am trying to make the most of my power.” FRANGILLI Michele (ITA) - Archer On why he lost: “I was a little nervous, just like in the other games. But I tried to just concentrate on my arrow and pay little attention to my opponent. His ranking is lower than mine (FRANGILLI ranked 15 in the ranking round, DOBROWOLSKI ranked 18) but he performed very well today. I have never competed with him and am unfamiliar with him, which may be the main reason for my defeat.”   On how the weather affected him today: “It is still too hot for me, I had tried to avoid the sun and I had adapted to it generally. I felt better today. As you can see, I didn’t sweat as much as the other day.”   On what he did to his cap: “I did nothing. What I could do is to make it wet and more ugly by sweating.”   On his expectations for the upcoming World Cup final stage in Dubai in November: “I have no certain expectation. I will try my best. I guess my main opponent will be TSYREMPILOV Baljinima from Russia.” GIROUILLE Romain (FRA) - Archer On the performance: “I am pleased to gain such a good result as 115 points with eight 10 points because I am in a good shape recently and the atmosphere built by my team-mates was really helpful and rather encouraging. It is true that my shooting today is better than my usual training.”   On the coming Continental Qualifications (European Championships; Vittel, France) held in May 2008 (France has not yet qualified any men’s spot for the 2008 Olympics): “Yes, I am looking forward to participating in the Beijing Olympic Games and I am going to take part in the continental competition. As for the specific training to get prepared, I think my coach will set everything for us, the French team as well as myself as an individual.”   On why he chooses to play archery: “I believe my character fits archery very well (because it needs a calm temperament).” IVASHKO Markiyan (UKR) - Archer On preference between indoor and outdoor archery competitions: “I like outdoor competition better, although I always win indoor competition.”   On whether he felt nervous to competing against current world no.1 TSYREMPILOV (RUS): “Every archer is nervous, but some can control and some can’t. I couldn’t in this match.”   On whether the limited time of rest influenced the result: “Sure it did. I had no time to have a rest after 1/32 elimination and went directly to the 1/16.”   On the goal for 2008 Games: “I want to be the first.” XUE Haifeng (CHN) - Archer On the 7 point arrow scored in the 2nd end: “I made a mistake when shooting. But since it had happened in the training before, I didn’t let it affect my next arrows.”   On the thoughts during the match when he was lagging behind by 5 points in the last end: “I never thought of giving up because nobody can know what will happen until the last arrow.”   On his performance: “I’m not satisfied with the result. But in terms of the score, I feel content because I just performed as usual. There were some arrows that needed to be given more time, but the others were all right. The only problem was that I could not shoot 10, it was all about my technique.”   On his opponent: “The French archerGIROUILLE Romainjust shot as well as usual, and I can see the gap between us (and the other countries), which had already be shown in the training.”   On the Asian Archery Championships in September in Xi’an, China: “I will learn a lot from this test event, and I hope to perform the best of me in that tournament.”   On the test event: “It helped me find many problems in my shooting. Also, I can learn something about my opponents, many of whom will participate in the Olympics next year.” GALIAZZO Marco (ITA) - Archer On the performance: “I could have performed better.”   On encountering archers from the Chinese Taipei team: “This time we were defeated but next year we will try our best to defeat them.”   On preparing to shoot then letting down the bow for a number of times: “It was a tough match; letting down the bow was a strategy to adjust myself. I was under great pressure all along.” KUO Cheng Wei (TPE) - Archer On the easy mindset for this tournament: “We just came to this tournament to adapt to the court (for the Olympics). We do not care much about the result.”   On competing against GALIAZZO, the individual gold medallist of the Athens Olympics: “I don’t care who the opponent is. Fully performing is my top concern.”   On the other Chinese Taipei archer (WANG Cheng Pang) who has qualified for the next round: “If we can fully perform ourselves, (winning a medal) will be quite smooth.” Marco GALIAZZO (ITA)    NARAY Michael (AUS) - Archer On competing against his team-mates: “It’s good and bad. It’s bad because only one of us will go through to the next round, but it’s good because we always shoot against each other, so I know that I can beat them.”   On whether he felt pressure from his opponent: “I didn’t feel any pressure from KIM. He came first because he shot very well in the ranking match, but I know that when we play against each other, it’s always very close.”   On his relationship with his team-mates: “There’s a good chemistry between us. We all get along with one another very well.”   On the grouping of the Australian archers: “It’s a pity. If we had had different groups, I think we would have more than one in the next round. Because we’ve all been doing well in the training. So, it’s just bad luck.” KIM Ha-Neul (AUS) - Archer On the bow: “Though my bow looks different from my team-mates (who were my opponents as well today), it is also not the same as the Korean archers use. This bow is the one I have used for a long time which suits me well, instead of some secret weapon that may help me win.”   On competing against his Australian team-mates in the same group: “I think it doesn’t matter for me, because even if I could not have won, one of my team-mates would have qualified for the next round. In this sense, this is not a negative factor for our team. All I did was just focus on the shooting, not thinking too much about that.”   On shooting eight 10 points: “Yes, I am quite satisfied with my shooting today.”   OH Kyo Moon (AUS) - Coach On three archers arranged in the same group in the Elimination Round: “Despite that arrangement, three of them are all fighting for Australia. One of them will eventually and definitely get through.”   News Service “Good Luck Beijing”
