Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN (UKR) in Porec World Cup Stage 2
The new world ranking lists were published on 12 May 2009. They include the results of the World Cup Stage 2 held in Porec, Croatia, during the first week of May. In spite of the Korean team’s absence from the first two legs, they continue at the top of the two recurve team lists. This is due to their dominance in 2008.
The Koreans are likely to remain solidly in the first places after Antalya and Shanghai as they have registered their teams for these third and fourth World Cup stages. However, the Korean individual archers who rank in top positions in the world ranking now are expected to lose their spots as most of them will not compete in world class events this year.
In the recurve men’s category, important changes have taken place after Santo Domingo and Porec. The reigning Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN (UKR) is now first due to the Korean absence, while India’s Jayanta TALUKDAR leaped from 16th to 5th place after his gold medal in Croatia. The 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALIAZZO (ITA) has shown an impressive recovery this year and is now 7th, moving up 15 positions in relation to his 22nd spot before Santo Domingo.
In women recurve, Natalia VALEEVA (ITA) did not rank as high as expected in Porec and lost the opportunity to overtake the two Koreans PARK Sung-Hyun and YUN Ok-Hee who are now 1st and 2nd. Italy’s Pia Carmen LIONETTI and China’s ZHAO Ling climbed up to the top ten after Porec, moving from to 22nd to 8th and from 37th to 10th, respectively.
In the men’s compound category, the top twelve ranked archers were present in Porec, but it was the gold medallist Sergio PAGNI (ITA) who got the most out of this event, moving up to first place on the World Ranking list. El Salvador’s Jorge JIMENEZ’s silver medal in Croatia helped him moved two positions up (9th).
Jamie VAN NATTA (USA) keeps a strong lead in compound women. Croatia’s Ivana BUDEN’s excellent performance in the world cup season this year has made her move to third place, while the Frenchwoman Amandine BOUILLOT has dropped down considerably (6th). Nicky HUNT (GBR), winner in Porec, moved up from 14th to 8th.
In the compound teams ranking, Russia is now first among the women, while the USA team remains in the lead on the men’s side.
