World Cup Stage 4 – Quotes of the Day 1
Shangai
Ø Are you qualified for the World Archery Championships in Ulsan? Ø What was the procedure for your qualifying? Ø Are you going to have a special preparation for these Championships? Ø What is the percentage of the chance of you qualifying for the World Cup Final?

- Yes!
- It takes place over two weekends. Each time we shoot a FITA Round, a 70m Round and then matches. We get points for each of those. Only the top six archers after the first weekend go to the second one.
- Same preparation as the World Cups.
- No idea.
Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA)
- Yes, I am qualified for the world championships.
- It happened over two competitions. In fact it was two double FITAs and elimination matches after each of them. After this World Cup we are going to have a couple of days to rest and then we have an intensive two-week preparation.
- It’s very hard to say… let’s just say it’s one of my objectives here in Shanghai.
Laurence GODFREY (GBR)
Only on the last question:
- For me 10%, but I think I need to win (smile).
Crispin DUENAS (CAN) photo
- Yes!
- The qualifying takes place over three days. On the first we shoot a FITA Round, then on the second day we shoot elimination matches and finally on the third day we shoot a Canadian speciality of “double elimination”, so you have to lose twice to be eliminated. Each time we get points for ranking and for scores.
- No, nothing “special”! Just the same preparation as for this World Cup and all previous ones. I have a training programme that covers the whole year and competitions (including this one) are part of it.
- Good percentage (smile).
Recurve Women
Magali FOULON (ESP)
- Yes!
- The selection process is made the year before. There are a few camps with the eight best archers in the country during which we shoot FITA Rounds, 70m Rounds and matches. Then the top three are qualified and one alternate, these four archers participate in all the events of the year.
- We have a special preparation camp in Ulsan (Korea) the whole month before the world championships.
- I don’t believe I have a chance.
Natalya ERDYNIYEVA (RUS)
- Not yet, I have to qualify here.
- We’re four archers and the top three here will go to Ulsan.
- We will be training in Ulsan from 12 August until the world championships.
- Well it’s hard to say… maybe 20%.
Alison WILLIAMSON (GBR)
- Yes!
- We will have a special team training camp.
- I don’t know the mathematics...
Compound Men
Dominique GENET (FRA)
- Yes!
- Well, this is the last part of the preparation for the world championships.
- I only went to one World Cup, that I won, but it’s not enough to be sure to go to the final. I would have gone to more but I was injured. So let’s wait and see.
Patrick COGHLAN (AUS)
- Yes!
- We had to shoot qualifications of 1380 points. Then we shot three FITAs added up the scores and the top two where qualified and the third was chosen by the coach.
- Yes, I will be going to the training institute to practise technical work and mental preparation. I will also be shooting a little more than usual.
- Right now!? 100%!
Peter ELZINGA (NED)
- Yes.
- We had to shoot qualifications of 1385 points three times.
- No not specially, no different than for a World Cup.
- I can’t tell. There are a lot of archers that can make it and 12 arrows is not much to decide, so no speculations.
Compound Women
Ivana BUDEN (CRO)
Only on the last question:
- No, I can’t tell you. We tried to look at every scenario but there are too many. It’s impossible to do maths. But I can tell you on Saturday (before the finals).
Sofia GONCHAROVA (RUS) photo
- Well, normally yes but actually this is the last test.
- I qualify for Ulsan over all competitions throughout the year and I need to be in the top three.
- Yes, I do prepare specially, as all archers. This preparation involves mainly a lot of shooting.
- No chance, in fact I missed out on two World Cup events this year so it is impossible for me to qualify this time.
