New Set System for individual matches at Porec World Cup

Recurve Men  The 1/32 elimination round featured several matches. FRANGILLI and NESPOLI shot in a 100% Italian match. NESPOLI led until the very last arrow, then shot an 8 resulting in a tie: 1-1 (set points). In the second set, FRANGILLI easily grabbed the 2 points. Finally FRANGILLI lost the 3rd set due to a bad 8. NESPOLI was able to tie again at 3-3 and keep the match open. In a shoot-off under strong wind, FRANGILLI shot an 8 and NESPOLI a 7.     USA Olympian Brady ELLISON and Iranian Keyvan RIYAZIMEHR were tied 1-1 after the first set. In the next set ELLISON raised his level to 58 points, gaining the 2 set points easily. In the third end the archers were tied after 3 arrows but then ELLISON clinched the set and the match with a perfect 30.    The 2008 Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN lost against the No. 55 seed from qualifications Matthew GRAY (AUS). Ilario DI BUO (ITA) and Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) were also eliminated at this stage.     In the 1/16 elimination round, ELLISON shot against NESTENG (NOR). The Norwegian was the best in the first set and won the 2 set points. ELLISON came back in the second set to tie the match. In the last end NESTENG was unable to reach the 10 ring (six 9s), while ELLISON shot three 10s and three 9s to win the match.     In the match between CHENG (MAS) and ROHRBERG (GER), the first set was tied until the last arrow. CHENG had a bad 7, and with a 9 ROHRBERG won the 2 set points. In the second set both shot 56, and so ROHRBERG kept the lead 3-1. In the third set the game was almost over but CHENG came back, mainly because of a 5 from ROHRBERG. ROHRBERG shot first in the shoot-off, an 8. With a 9, CHEN qualified for the next round.     The Mexican Juan René SERRANO led Vic WUNDERLE (USA) by 2 points after the first set. They were almost tied in the second set, but WUNDERLE’s total was 1 point higher and he earned the 2 set points. In the third set the American was almost perfect with 59, while SERRANO had problems and shot a 2, giving the set points and the match to WUNDERLE.      In his match against PRILEPAU (BLR), FRANGILLI took the lead after the first set but wasn’t able to maintain his supremacy, while PRILEPAU was very consistent. They were tied after the second set 2-2. PRILEPAU improved throughout the match and advanced to the next round.     The talented Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) lost against RAI (IND). Simon TERRY (GBR), Marco GALIAZZO (ITA), Jean-Charles VALLADONT (FRA) all won their match 4-2 to advance to the next round.    Contrarily to what happened in his previous matches, ELLISON took the lead from the very start in the 1/8 elimination round. He won the first set 56-54 against Rahul BANERJEE (IND). Then the American shot 10-9-9-9-9-10 vs 10-9-9-8-8-10 for his opponent. ELLISON clinched the match 4-0.    The No. 20 seed Baljinima TSYREMPILOV (RUS) shot against the 2004 Olympic champion GALIAZZO. Both athletes were in great shape and tied at 57 points in the first set. A couple of not so solid arrows from GALIAZZO gave the next two set points to the Russian. In the 3rdset GALIAZZO wasn’t able to reach the 10 ring and TSYREMPILOV won with had a better group of arrows.
The match between Simon TERRY and Baljinima TSYREMPILOV was the most interesting quarterfinal. The archers were tied after the first set. With a perfect 30 in the next set TERRY led 3-1. But the Russian took the third set to tie again 3-3. TERRY was able to win the fourth set 5-3. Then in the last set TSYREMPILOV came back 5-5. In the shoot-off TERRY overtook his opponent 9-8 and advanced to the semifinal. Meanwhile WUNDERLE led 4-0 after the first two sets against Franck FISSEUX (FRA), but the Frenchman managed to come back 4-4. In the fifth set, WUNDERLE scored 9-x10-7 to beat FISSEUX who shot 8-9-8, so WUNDERLE moved to the semifinal. In the other quarterfinal matches, VALLADONT beat Bilikto TSYREMPILOV (RUS) and ELLISON defeated CHENG.    In the first semifinal, WUNDERLE shot one more 10 than TERRY (x10-9-x10 to 10-9-9) in the first set and took the 2 set points. TERRY tied after the second end 2-2. Wind started to blow in the third end and the scores were lower: 10-10-8 for WUNDERLE, 10-10-7 for TERRY. In the third set both were equal at 9-9-9, score 5-3. In the very last set TERRY shot again 9-9-9. WUNDERLE opened with an 8 and recovered with two 10s to win the match, final score 7-3.    In the other semifinal, VALLADONT and ELLISON both opened with 9-9-9, 1-1 after the first set. In the second set VALLADONT was more consistent: 9-10-9 vs 9-9-9 and gained two more set points: 3-1. The archers were still tied in the 3rd end, moving the score to 4-2. In the fourth set ELLISON managed to come back and tie 4-4. A shoot-off was required after both archers tied at 27 in the fifth end. VALLADONT shot first and it was an 8. ELLISON’s arrow hit the bull’s eye, final score 6-5. The young American will face his compatriot WUNDERLE in the gold medal final.    Recurve Women   The No. 64 Véronique MARRIER d’UNIENVILLE (MRI) gave in a good performance in her match against the No. 1 seed from qualifications Justyna MOSPINEK (POL). The archers were tied after the first set and both started the second set with a 10. However Véronique was not able to stay at this level and lost the match 2-4.     No less than 8 matches ended in a tie at this stage of the competition, resulting in 8 shoot-offs. The match between Zane BERZINA (LAT) and Amy OLIVER (GBR) finished in an extraordinary shoot-off where both archers shot their arrow at the exact same distance from the centre, and so a second arrow was needed to break the tie.       In the 1/16 elimination round, BERZINA lost the first set against Damla ERGIN (TUR) but came back to win the next one. The Turkish archer was very consistent with sets of 53-53-53. BERZINA’s total of 49 in the last set was not sufficient to advance to the next round. In the other matches, as in the last round, a nigh number of shoot-offs were necessary to break the ties.
In the next round, Justyna MOSPINEK and Begunhan Elif UNSAL (TUR) were tied 1-1 after the first set. Justyna won the next set and tied in the last one to win the match 4-2. In a 100% French match Sophie DODEMONT led Bérengère SCHUH after the first set. SCHUH came back in the next two sets despite the fact that she was bothered by strong wind. She shot her arrows very late but still managed to win the last two sets 55-50 and 57-54. The young Olympian Mariana AVITIA (MEX) trailed 0-2 after the first set but came back to win 4-2 against Damla ERGIN.   In the quarterfinals, SCHUH and AVITIA fought in a very tight match going all the way to the last arrow. SCHUH led 2-0, 4-2, 5-3 after four sets. The Mexican still had a chance to tie the game in the 5th set. The usually fast shooter AVITIA started with two 9s, but then had some trouble with the wind and finished with a 4 at the buzzer. SCHUH scored 8-8-7 in the last set, 1 point better than AVITIA to win the match 7-3. As was the case throughout the morning, the No. 1 seed MOSPINEK had some trouble to win her match. She lost 0-2 but then came back strongly to win 6-2, finishing with 10-10-8 against Rimil BURUILY (IND). In the other quarterfinals KUZNETSOVA beat ZHOU 6-0, and Sabrina STRUYF had a very tight match against GUO Faping: 2-0, 2-2, 3-3, 5-3, 6-4 for the Belgian.    The first semifinal featured SCHUH and Elena KUZNETSOVA (BLR). The Belarusian outscored Berengere 10-9-6 to 8-7-9 in the first set to took the lead 2-0. The French archer was better in the next set (9-10-9 to 10-8-7) to tie at 2-2. With 10-9-9 to Berengere’s 9-9-8, KUZNETSOVA took back the lead 4-2. In the fourth end, Berengere came back again, 4-4 (9-x10-10 to 10-9-8). Both archers had the same total in the last end, 8-10-8 for Elena and 7-10-9 for Berengere. In the shoot-off, KUZNETSOVA’s arrow landed in the 10 ring, only 1 cm from the centre! Berengere shot a good 10 of her own but it was not enough to advance to the gold medal final.     A big surprise came in the other semifinal when the No. 13 Sabrina STRUYF defeated the leader from qualifications MOSPINEK. The Belgian trailed 8-8-8 to 9-9-8 in the first set (0-2), but came back with x10-x10-9 to 9-9-6 in the next set to tie 2-2. She then won the next set 7-10-9 to 9-8-8. In the fourth set Sabrina shot 9-9-9 while Justyna failed to come back with 9-6-9. The final score was 6-2 for STRUYF, who will shoot the final against KUZNETSOVA.   The bronze and gold medal finals will be shot Saturday.
