Nico Wiener gets second top seed of the season with 714 at Antalya 2026

Nico Wiener celebrated with his family after securing his second top seed of the season in compound men’s qualification on Tuesday at the third stage of the 2026 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya.

The 2025 Indoor Archery World Series Finals champion overtook Mathias Fullerton in the second half of the 72-arrow round after trailing the world number one by one point at halfway.

Wiener improved on the 712 points he shot to top qualification in Puebla earlier this season, finishing on 714 in Türkiye.

His father Wolfgang had not travelled to either Puebla or Shanghai earlier this year, and after shooting five arrows in the X-ring – the central zone within the 10-ring used to break ties in qualification – in the final end, the Austrian celebrated by embracing his father, while mother Bettina cheered from the stands.

“I never expected to shoot 714 here because it was super windy sometimes,” said Wiener, who recorded 39 arrows in the X-ring. “It worked out, I was sticking to my plan to make the best shots I can.”

“Also thank you to my father for supporting me as a coach and my mum for cheering from the stands.”

“I’m super thankful for my sponsor and my family for supporting me like crazy. Without them it would not be possible to shoot tournaments every weekend and perform well.”

Before 2026, Wiener had never topped qualification at a Hyundai Archery World Cup stage. He has now achieved the feat twice in three events this season.

The Austrian came close to converting his top seed into gold in Puebla before narrowly losing 146-145 to Fullerton in the final.

Now competing in Antalya alongside many of his closest supporters – including his girlfriend, compound women’s world number one Andrea Becerra – Wiener believes the familiar environment helps bring out his best shooting.

“It just feels like when we shoot at home because we train almost every day at home,” said the 29-year-old. “He [Wolfgang] knows what I need and he knows what I want from him and it's worked out perfectly.”

It was also a strong day for recently crowned European Outdoor Championships bronze medallist Ella Gibson at the Gloria Sports Arena, which is hosting the Hyundai Archery World Cup for the first time.

The British archer secured her first top qualification seed at 50 metres since the Krakow-Malopolska 2023 European Games.

“I made some changes in the last few weeks after Shanghai,” revealed Gibson, the former world number one. “I changed my arrows to be a little weaker and I think it gave me a bit more forgiveness.”

“In the last week I’ve also done some video-delay analysis of my form and changed my draw length a little bit because I felt like I didn’t look right – which I know is a weird thing to say – but you’re used to what you should look like.”

Competition continues in Antalya on Wednesday with compound team eliminations in the morning and recurve qualification in the afternoon.
