Nico Wiener gets second top seed of the season with 714 at Antalya 2026

Nico Wiener proudly celebrated with his family after he bagged his second top seed of the season in compound men qualification on Tuesday afternoon at Antalya 2026 - stage three of the World Cup.

Last year's Vegas Shoot champion overtook Mathias Fullerton in the second half of the 72-arrow round after trailing the world number one by one point in the first and secured two more points than his pole-worthy score in Puebla [712] to get 714 in Türkiye.

His father wasn't in Mexico or Shanghai last month though, and after shooting five Xs in the final end, the Austrian punched the air before hugging former archer himself Wolfgang Wiener, with mum Bettina cheering in the stands.

“I never expected to shoot 714 here because it was super windy sometimes,” said Wiener, who recorded 39 arrows in the minute X-ring. “It worked out, I was sticking to my plan to make the best shots I can. Also thank you to my father for supporting me as a coach and my mum for cheering from the stands.”

“I'm super thankful for my sponsor and my family for supporting me like crazy. Without them it would not be possible to shoot tournaments every weekend and perform well.”

As previously mentioned, Wiener had already been at this stage in April and before 2026 had never even been top seed at any of the 24 World Cups prior to this year.

Therefore, it would suggest that right now in qualification there aren't many better in the compound men's discipline, which is already stacked with talent this week in Antalya in the shape of giants such as Fullerton and Mike Schloesser.

Gold medals on archery's premier international circuit, however, aren't given out following 72 arrows but 15 in the much more pressured matchplay system, which Wiener did come close to in Puebla, falling short only to Fullerton in the final there, 145-146.

But now, with all his biggest supporters assembled together in Türkiye - including his girlfriend and compound women's world champion Andrea Maya Becerra Arizaga - the Yankton 2022 World Field gold medallist has as much emotional support as well as tactical feedback from those who know him best which will help get the most out of his stellar capabilities.

“It just feels like when we shoot at home because we train almost every day at home. He [Wolfgang] knows what I need and he knows what I want from him and it's worked out perfectly.”

It also worked out rather well for the recently awarded European Outdoor bronze medallist Ella Gibson at the Gloria Sports Arena - a new venue for the World Cup.

A pole position for the Brit in the compound women category is her first at 50 metres since the Krakow-Malopolska 2023 European Games.

“I made some changes in the last few weeks after Shanghai,” revealed the former world number one. “I changed my arrows to be a little weaker and I think it gave me a bit more forgiveness and then in the last week I've done some kind of video-delay analysis of my form, changed my draw length a little bit because I felt like I didn't look right, which I know is a weird thing to say, but you're used to what you should look like.”

Competition continues in Antalya on Wednesday with compound team eliminations in the morning and recurve qualifying in the afternoon.
