Individual Champions Crowned at the 2nd Asian Grand Prix
Bangkok – 18 March 2010
Archers competed in the individual gold and bronze medal matches this morning in Bangkok (THA).
A Mixed Team event was shot in the afternoon.
Recurve Men
Drama took place in the men’s gold medal final when in the 2nd end the Iranian archer came down two times and with 3 seconds to go prepared to shoot his final arrow. An appeal was under way since the arrow might have been shot out of time. This disturbed the proceedings of the match and the match result gave the win to Iran pending the outcome of the appeal. The Jury of Appeal decision was that the arrow was shot out of time and therefore BANERJEE won the match after 10 points were deducted from the Iranian archer. The FITA rules clearly states that when an arrow is shot out of time the highest scoring arrow is removed from the end.
Recurve Women
The women’s recurve match between KIM Hee-Jung (KOR) and Deepika KUMARI (IND) saw a change over after the match seemed over when the Indian archer had a bad start. However it was not so, and a perfect 10-10-10 in the last end gave KUMARI a well deserved win.
Compound Men
The men’s compound match was an Indian affair between HANSDAH and SRITHER. Three shoot-offs were necessary to determine the winner. The more experienced HANSDAH won in the end. YE Min Swe from Myanmar won the bronze (photo).
Compound Women
Ngeain AUNG (MYA) won the gold medal over Amaya PAZ (PHI). Narisara TINBUA from Thailand won a bronze medal after trailing until she came back in the last end.
Mixed Teams
As expected, India won the gold medal in the recurve category. The mixed team from Chinese Taipei won the silver and Japan the bronze. In compound, Myanmar won the gold over India, and the bronze went to Vietnam.
