Compound Qualifications – Half-way

The morning was marked by several new world records, all set by American competitors. In compound men individual Reo WILDE beat his own world record of 708 set on 24 April 2011 with 711 points. The compound men's team established a new world record with 2116 points, beating their own mark of 2112 set on 8 April 2011 in Phoenix, USA. With a total of 2083 points the compound women's team blew up the world record set by Italy at the European Grand Prix in Antalya back in April (2044).  Compound Men At the half-way mark (36 arrows) two Americans were tied on top of the compound men's category: Braden GELLENTHIEN and Reo WILDE, with 357 points each. They were closely followed one point behind by Dominique GENET (FRA) and Herian BOCALI (ITA). At 5th place was Luc VERDEYEN (BEL) with 355. Four competitors stood between 6th and 9th places, all with the same score of 354: Shaun TEASDALE (NZL), Slavko TURSIC (SLO), Patrick LAURSEN (DEN) and Roberto HERNANDEZ (ESA). Reigning World Cup winner Sergio PAGNI (ITA) had a slow start, 44th only with 347 points.   Currently ranked No. 2 in the world WILDE made the difference in the second part of the qualifications. With 711 points he beat his own world record of 708 set on 24 April 2011 and took a 4-point lead over his fellow countryman GELLENTHIEN (707). The Frenchman GENET also scored 707 points in total, but was ranked 3rd because he shot 17 Xs compared to 30 Xs for GELLENTHIEN. The archer from El Salvador HERNANDEZ came up from 9th to 4th places (706) after shooting the second best score in the second half. Michael CAUWE (BEL), who was 14th after 36 arrows, climbed up to 8th (703), the last direct qualifying sport for the 1/16 elimination matches (note: the first 8 of each category are indeed exempt from the first two rounds). The archer losing this advantage was the Italian BOCCALI, who went down from 4th to 9th place (702).   Compound Women The provisional 1st place after the first half was for the experienced American Jamie VAN NATTA with 350. She stood only one point ahead of three runner-ups: 2010 World Cup winner Albina LOGINOVA (RUS), Gladys WILLEMS (BEL) and Christie COLIN (USA). Two other Americans stayed in ambush: Erika ANSCHUTZ was 5th with 348 points and Diane WATSON 7th with 347. The local favourite Ivana BUDEN (CRO) only ranked 46th (331) after 36 arrows.   After winning the Arizona Cup back in April, the American COLIN proved she was in good shape, shooting the best score of the second half and finishing 1st of the qualifications with 696 points. Her teammate VAN NATTA dropped to 2nd place with 695 points. Another American, ANSCHUTZ, finished 4th (692). The Belgian WILLEMS came in between at 3rd place (693). Reigning World Cup winner LOGINOVA went down from 2nd to 5th rank (690), while the Iranian lady Parsamehr MAHTAB made a leap forward from 15th to 6th (689) after shooting the second best score of the second half. The 2007 world champion Eugenia SALVI (ITA), 8th after 36 arrows, dropped down 21st place.  Team Events The compound men's No. 1 team in the world USA unsurprisingly led the qualifications half-way through with 1061 points. Only one point behind Darrin CHRISTENBERRY, Braden GELLENTHIEN and Reo WILDE was the French team made up of Pierre Julien DELOCHE, Dominique GENET and Sebastien PEINEAU (1061). Belgium, with Michael CAUWE, Sam KYRITSOGLOU and Luc VERDEYEN, was provisionally 3rd with a 1056 total.   With a total of 2116 points the American compound men's team established a new world record, beating their own mark of 2112 set on 8 April 2011 in Phoenix, USA. They finished qualifications 14 points ahead of France (2102). Denmark came up from 6th to 3rd place (2100) overtaking Belgium, 4th with 2091 points. Iran also improved their ranking in the second part from 7th to 5th (2089). Two of the favourite teams suffered a fall: Great Britain from 4th to 6th and Italy from 5th to 7th (both 2087).   In compound women, Team USA had already dug the gap with their pursuers. With 1047 points, Erika ANSCHUTZ, Christie COLIN and Jamie VAN NATTA had a 16-point advantage over the Italians Laura LONGO, Eugenia SALVI and Marcella TONIOLI (1031) and 18 over No. 1 team in the world Russia with Natalia AVDEEVA, Viktoria BALZHANOVA and Albina LOGINOVA (1029).   With a total of 2083 points Team USA blew up the world record set by Italy at the European Grand Prix in Antalya in April this year (2044). The Italians in Porec took the 2nd place of qualifications but 49 points (!) behind the Americans. France made a leap ahead from 7th to 3rd place (2030).   Leading both the men and women individual qualifications, the Americans were of course also in the lead in the mixed team event. However, with 707 points altogether, they were closely followed by the Belgian (704), Italian (703), French (702) and Swedish (701) pairs.   Unsurprisingly, the American double finished 1st in the mixed team qualifications (1407), ahead of Belgium (1396) and France (1390). Russia came up from 6th to 4th place (1389) and Iran from 8th to 5th place (1387).   In the afternoon on 4 May in Porec the competition will go on with the recurve eliminations up to semifinals.   Stayed tuned at www.worldarchery.org!   World Archery Communication
