Athlete of the Week: Kevin EVANS (CAN)

The Canadian archer Kevin EVANS competed at the Para-Archery World Ranking Event in Brasilia two weeks ago with a 2nd place finish. He currently holds the Para-Archery world championships title and two world records. He has also competed in many able-bodied events. He is the World Archery Athlete of the Week!
EVANS started competing after he lost his left arm in a 2000 industrial accident—a seismic-rig accident in Alberta's Peace River region. Shooting a bow was one of the first things he can remember wanting to do following the accident. He used archery to help in his recovery, and began competing shortly after.
It all started for EVANS as a teenager when he shot with a recurve bow, but it became more of a hunting hobby in his 20s. In 2003, he attended his first national championships and won the event. In his first Para-Archery world championship in 2005, he placed 5th. He then became world champion in 2007 and 2009.
In 2008, he was very enthusiastic with the introduction of the open compound category—the para-archery category in which he competes—at the Paralympic Games in Beijing. His world championships title the year before had ensured a qualifying place for Canada in Beijing where he finished 6th in the individual event.
EVANS currently holds two Para-Archery individual world records in the open compound category. He set a new 50m score with 353 points in 2007 and beat the 12-arrow match record with 118 in 2008.
