A very happy couple, as Rikki and James BINGHAM secure selection to World Championships
Lilleshall (GBR) – 25 May 2011
Rikki BINGHAM in action
Married couple James and Rikki BINGHAM have secured selection to the Great Britain team for the World Archery Championships in Turin, Italy.
The two compound archers came through two competitive selection shoots to book their ticket to Italy in July. Indeed James BINGHAM pipped Liam GRIMWOOD to the third and final place in the compound men's team, meaning that the silver medal winner at the last World Championships, in Korea two years ago, will miss out this time.
It also means that the successful Commonwealth gold medal winning team of GRIMWOOD, Chris WHITE and Duncan BUSBY, has also been broken up.
Rikki BINGHAMwill line up alongside Lucy HOLDERNESS and Andrea GALES in the compound women's team, and celebrated her selection at the weekend by winning the recurve women's event at the first Archery GB National Series shoot of the year.
Said Rikki: "It's really exciting that both James and me are going to the World Championships, but we have worked very hard for it, and are really looking forward to being part of a great event in Turin."
Barry ELEY, Archery GB's Performance Manager, said both Rikki and James have earned their selection on form and merit. He said: "They both have been shooting very well for some time now, and selection for the World Championships is reward for all the effort they have both put in. I am really pleased for them both."
GB's recurve line up has a familiar look about it. Alan WILLS, Larry GODFREY and Simon TERRY—who won the gold medal at last month's European Grand Prix in Antalya—won selection for the men's event, while the women's Commonwealth Games silver medal winning team of Alison WILLIAMSON, Naomi FOLKARD and Amy OLIVER will represent GB in the women's event.
