Recurve MenArchers shot their elimination rounds in the form of 5 sets of 3 arrows at 70 metres. Three of the best archers were eliminated in the 1/48 round. The No. 4 seed from the World Cup in Porec, Jake KAMINSKI (USA), was surprisingly defeated by the no. 85 seed, Andres GOMEZ (ESP), in a shoot-off. The score was 6-5 (28-27, 26-30, 27-24, 23-26, 23-26, 24-24, 9*-9). Local archer Sermet CINAR easily defeated the bronze medallist from the Beijing Games, Bair BADENOV, 6-2 (28-27, 27-28, 27-25, 29-28). As for Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND), the bronze medallist from the last World Cup Final lost to Majid MIRRAHIMI (IRI) seeded no. 98. The match was very tight, with the archer from India tying his opponent at 5-5 (29-24, 29-25, 27-28, 27-27, 23) after the fifth set. In the shoot-off MIRRAHIMI scored a 10 to beat TALUKDAR (9). The double bronze medallist from the Barcelona 1992 Olympics, Simon TERRY (GBR), faced Niels DALL (DEN). He won the first set 10-10-9 to 7-x10-9. DALL shot his own 10-10-9 in the second set (TERRY shot 9-8-9) to tie at 2-2. Both archers shot 28 in the third set to tie at 3-3. TERRY was the most consistent in the last two sets, shooting 28 points both times while DALL shot 25 and 27. The Briton won the match 7-3. Another British archer, Alan WILLS shot on the neighbouring target. He started with 23 points (7-8-8) against Anton PRILEPAU (BLR), who shot 9-9-10 to lead 2-0. WILLS displayed great shooting in the following set (29) to come back at 2-2. PRILEPAU scored 29 again the third set to take back the lead 4-2. In the fourth set, he shot 9-9-8. WILLS started with 9-9 but his tab plucked and had a bad release for a low 7. PRILEPAU won 6-2.   In the 1/24 elimination round, Jean-Charles VALLADONT had a great start (30) against Antonio FERNANDES (ESP) to lead 2-0. The Frenchman won the second set 9-9-10 to 9-9-9 to consolidate his lead at 4-0. It seemed as if he would have an easy win. However FERNANDES came back to win the third set (10-x10-9 to 10-8-9). Both archers shot a mediocre 25 points in the fourth set, VALLADONT 7-10-8 and FERNANDES 8-9-8, moving the score to 5-3. The Spaniard shot 29 in the last set, VALLADONT shot 9-7-9. At 5-5, a shoot-off would decide the winner. VALLADONT edged his opponent 10-8. The match between XING Yu (CNH) and Michele FRANGILLI would be the revenge from last year’s gold medal final. It started a set of 29 points from both archers. FRANGILLI went on shooting very consistently (29-29-28) to win the three following sets and the match, 7-1. Fellow Italian Mauro NESPOLI also qualified, but the 2004 Olympic champion Marco GALIAZZO lost to Ryan TYACK (AUS). TERRY had a tough match against PRILEPAU. He won the first set 29-25 but the archers tied in the second, 28-28. TERRY won the third set (27-26) to lead 5-1. He lost the next two (26-28, 27-28). Tied at 5-5, the archers had to go to the shoot-off, which TERRY won 10-6. Juan René SERRANO (MEX) faced Belikto TSYREMPILOV (RUS) and lost 3-7. Finally, the 2008 Olympic champion Viktor RUBAN qualified for the 1/16 elimination round.   Recurve WomenThe archers shot 5 sets of 3 arrows in their 1/48 elimination round. Mariana AVITIA and Aida ROMAN fought in a Mexican duel that started with very low scores from both: 5-9-10 for AVITIA, 8-7-9 for ROMAN. The 2008 Olympian AVITIA won the second end 23-21 to lead 3-1, but ROMAN came back in the third set, mainly because of a 3 by AVITIA. The archers tied at 3-3, then 4-4. AVITIA finally managed a good last end, 9-9-x10, against ROMAN’s scores of 8-8-10. AVITIA won the match 6-4 and qualified to the 1/24 elimination round, as did Alison WILLIAMSON (GBR), Natalia SANCHEZ (COL) and Pia LIONETTI (ITA). She outscored CHENG’s 8-9-x10 to win two set points and tie at 4-4. In the last set, CHENG started with 8-7-9, leaving the door open to NASARIDZE who started with 9-8. Unfortunately, the Turkish archer lost it all on the last arrow, a bad 6. The host country was no more represented in this category. Another significant elimination was Natalia SANCHEZ’s. The bronze medallist at the last World Championships lost to Lori CIESLINSKI (USA) 4-6.   Compound WomenIn the 1/24 the archers shot five ends of 3 arrows (cumulative scores). The archer from Venezuela suffered an 8 followed by two 9s, not enough against LANTEE’s 9-9-9. GUEDEZ lost the match 137 to 138.
