GENET, LOGINOVA and the US Teams lead Compound Qualifications in Antalya
Antalya
Compound men and women shot the 50-metre Round (72 arrows) on Wednesday morning in Antalya. Individually, Dominique GENET (FRA) upset the American favourites to win qualifications, while on the women’s side the top spot went to the current World Champion and World Cup winner Albina LOGINOVA (RUS). The USA dominated the team qualifications, finishing 1st in the men’s and women’s team as well as the mixed team. Compound Men
The scores were extremely high in this category. Dejan SITAR (SLO) had a perfect start with 120 points after 12 arrows, but dropped to 10th at the halfway mark (36 arrows). At this point, two of the favourites were in the lead with 357 points out of a possible 360; the winner of the 2009 and 2010 World Cup Finals Sergio PAGNI (ITA) and last year’s winner from Antalya Martin DAMSBO (DEN).
In the second half, Dominique GENET (FRA) scored a great total of 354 to move from 3rd to 1st place. His total of 710 was only two points short of the world record. Sergio PAGNI placed in 2nd with the same total. Martin DAMSBO finished 3rd with 709, followed by Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) who scored 708. This total was matched by two Americans, Braden GELLENTHIEN and Reo WILDE, who finished 5th and 6th repsectively. Majid GHEYDI from Iran, who was previously 17th, scored the 2nd best total of the second half (355) to place a surprising 7th (706). Peter ELZINGA (NED) and Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) tied at 705, meaning a shoot-off was needed to decide the winner of the 8th spot (note: the first 8 of each category are exempt from the first two rounds). Peter ELZINGA shot a few millimetres closer to the centre than JIMENEZ and qualified directly to the 1/16 elimination round.
Compound Women
On the women's side, the current World Champion and 2010 World Cup winner Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) was in the lead at the halfway mark with 350 points. Her total in the second half (349) was 3 points lower than Jamie VAN NATTA’s (352), enough though to win qualifications. Americans Christie COLIN and VAN NATTA placed 2nd and 3rd with the same total. Van NATTA came a long way, having been only 14th after the first half. Italians Laura LONGO and Marcella TONIOLI ranked 4th and 6th, respectively, with totals of 693 and 689. In between them, the archer from Iran, Parsamehr MAHTAB, was 5th with 692 points. Three athletes from Scandinavia finished in a perfect tie at 688 - 42 10s - 15 X10s: Malin JOHANSSON and Isabell DANIELSSON from Sweden, Camilla SOEMOD from Denmark. The Swedes proved stronger in the shoot-off, taking the 7th and 8th spots to advance directly to the 1/16 elimination round.
Compound Men Team
The No. 1 team in the world, USA, unsurprisingly led the qualifications halfway through with 1061 points. Four points behind Darrin CHRISTENBERRY, Braden GELLENTHIEN and Reo WILDE was the Danish team of Martin DAMSBO, Claus FRANTZEN and Patrick LAURSEN (1057). The Italians – Herian BOCCALI, Sergio PAGNI and Antonio POMPEO – were provisionally 3rd with a 1053 total.
With a final total of 2116, the Americans equalled their own world record set at the last World Cup stage in Porec, Croatia. They finished qualifications 13 points ahead of Denmark. South Africa came up to 3rd place (2100 points), narrowly edging France, 4th with the same total.
Compound Women Team
The USA led the women’s qualifications as well. With 1032 points, Erika ANSCHUTZ, Christie COLIN and Jamie VAN NATTA were only 3 points ahead of the Mexicans Ana DEL MILAGRO CRISANTO, Felisa DE LA CONCHA and Linda OCHOA (1029). In 3rd place was France (Joanna CHESSE, Pascale LEBECQUE and Patricia TCHEPIKOFF); just one point behind was Italy, 4th at 1028.
Without surprise, the Americans finished the qualifications in 1st place. With 2075, they were 10 points ahead of Italy (2065). Iran made a leap to 3rd place at 2062, followed by Russia (2055), while France dropped to 5th (2052).
Compound Mixed Double
The Italian pair of Laura LONGO/Sergio PAGNI scored 704 to lead the Americans Christie COLIN/Reo WILDE by 2 points after the first half. Close behind was the French pair (701). Belgium and Denmark (both 698), the Netherlands and Russia (697) were also very close in the 4th to 7th spots.
After all arrows were shot, Italy and the USA tied for 1st place with 1403 points. The USA won the shoot-off and the qualifications. Iran moved up to 3rd thanks to a strong performance in the second half. Denmark placed 4th (1397) ahead of France (1395).
The competition continues in the afternoon with recurve and compound elimination matches.
