Compound Men Shoot Eliminations at the Antalya World Cup

Compound MenArchers shot their elimination rounds in the form of 5 ends of 3 arrows at 50 metres. In the 1/48 round, the no. 60 Patrizio HOFER (SUI) shot 9-10-9 in his first end against the no. 53 Claus FRANTZEN. The Swiss led 28-26 and was perfect in the second end (30) to gain 3 more points over his opponent. He led 58-53, then 87-81, 115-110. His last end wasn’t so good at 26 (9-8-9), compared to FRANTZEN’s X10-10-9, but enough for HOFER to win 141-139. In his match against the no. 57 Aykut AKDAG, the no. 56 Julio Ricardo FIERRO (MEX) scored 10-10-9 in the first end (against 9-9-9 to his opponent). The archer from Mexico further increased his lead in the second end (58-54). AKDAG reacted with very good shooting in the third end (29-28) and in the fourth (30-28) to come only 1 point short of a tie, 113-114. Everything was still possible. In the final end, FIERRO shot 10-8-X10 while the local archer did 9-9-9. FIERRO won 142-140. In the other matches, the Swiss Philippe HORNER defeated his compatriot Ruedi HOETZ. Chris WHITE (GBR) advanced to the 1/24 elimination round, while last year’s bronze medallist Vladas SIGAUSKAS (LTU) was eliminated.   In a tight 1/24 elimination match, Patrizio HOFER and Gabriel BADENHORST (RSA) finished in a tie at 143-143. HOFER was the strongest in the shoot-off (10 to 9). Julio Ricardo FIERRO gave Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) a hard time in their 1/24 elimination match. They were tied at 145-145 after five ends and had to go to a shoot-off. JIMENEZ outscored FIERRO 10 to 9. His compatriot from El Salvador Roberto HERNANDEZ also qualified, and so did last year’s champion from Porec Sam KYRITSOGLOU (BEL). The young WHITE met the experienced no. 16 Rodger WILLETT Jr. (USA) in a tight match. The Briton was the best in the beginning, leading 30-28, 59-57. However the match came to a turning point in the third end. WHITE shot 9-9-9, while WILLETT’s scores of 9-X10-10 allowed him to come back and tie at 86-86. The American went on to shoot the remaining six arrows perfectly (60), leaving no chance to his opponent. He won the match 146-141.   The competition continues in the afternoon with the Recurve and Compound individual elimination matches all the way to semifinals.   Stayed tuned on www.worldarchery.org!   World Archery Communication
