ELLISON, WILLETT Will Shoot for Gold Again in Antalya

 
Recurve Men and Women shot 5 sets of 3 arrows at 70m. In Compound, archers shot 5 ends of 3 arrows with cumulative scores. The start of the session marked the entry of the 8 pre-seeded athletes from qualifications in each category, who, according to the new rules were exempt from shooting the first two elimination rounds.
 Brady ELLISON (USA) and HO Jin Hyek (KOR)Recurve Men No less than four French archers competed in the 1/16 elimination round, resulting in two duels. The No. 7 Gaël PREVOST faced Jean-Charles VALLADONT. They tied at 29-29 in the first two sets. PREVOST kept shooting the same totals while VALLADONT shot 27 and 28. The 17-year-old PREVOST won 6-2. The No. 8 Romain GIROUILLE (329) met Thomas AUBERT. He led 2-0 but AUBERT came back at 2-2, 4-2, 6-2. As for the Koreans, the 2010 Asian champion and leader from the qualifications, KIM Woojin (KOR), met Dmytro HRACHOV (UKR) in the best match of this round. HRACHOV shot two perfect sets to lead 4-0 (30-27, 30-29). Both archers had 30 in the third set, moving the score to 5-1. KIM recovered the last two sets, 30-28 and 29-27 to tie at 5-5. However the Korean lost the shoot-off 9-10. OH Jin-Hyek had an easier match, beating Alexey BELOV (RUS) 6-0. The last Korean competing at this stage, the No. 5 IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) faced Elias CUESTA (ESP). The Korean led 29-27, 28-24, but the Spaniard won the next two sets 27-26 and 29-28. The last set saw both archers shoot 27, resulting in a tie at 5-5. IM won the shoot-off 10-9. Meanwhile Simon TERRY (GBR) defeated Mauro NESPOLI (ITA) 6-2, and the winner from Porec. Brady ELLISON qualified with the same score. The No. 3 DAI Xiaoxiang (CHN) and Ryan TYACK (AUS) tied at 1-1 and 3-3. The Chinese archer went on to win the next two sets and the match, 7-3. The No. 6 Pedro VIVAS ALCALA from Mexico trailed Wenyuan CHEN (CHN) 0-2, 2-4, but came back 4-4 for a final victory 6-4. Viktor RUBAN (UKR) trailed Taylor WORTH (AUS) 0-2, but came back to 1-3, 3-3, 5-3, 5-5 and won the shoot-off 10-8.   After beating the leader from qualifications, Dmytro HRACHOV was just as good in the 1/8 elimination round. He beat Simon TERRY 6-2 (27-25, 27-26, 25-29, 28-27). IM, OH, DAI and PREVOST all won their matches 6-0. The match between VIVAS ALCALA and RUBAN was tighter. The Spaniard won 7-3. The No. 26 AUBERT upset the No. 10 Laurence GODFREY (GBR) 6-4. Finally, the winner from Porec ELLISON had to go to a shoot-off against Jantsan GANTUGS (MGL), whom he defeated 10-9.   In the quarterfinals, the “Roger FEDERER” of archery IM Dong-Hyun faced “the Rafael NADAL” of our sport Brady ELLISON. The Korean shot 8-9-9 against ELLISON’s 10-9-9 to lose the first set. However he won the second set (27-25) to tie at 2-2. ELLISON was perfect in the third set (X10-X10-X10), while IM shot 9-9-9. The American led 4-2. He outscored IM in the fourth set (10-9-10 to 10-8-9) and won the match 6-2. In the other matches, HRACHOV beat PREVOST 6-5 (27-27, 24-28, 29-29, 28-26, 30-26, 9-7), DAI defeated VIVAS ALCALA in a shoot-off, 10-9. Finally, OH had an easy victory over AUBERT, 7-1.   ELLISON entered his semifinal against HRACHOV with 30 points to 29. The archers tied at 28 in the second set, and 30 in the third (3-3). ELLISON then shot 10-9-10, while the archer from Ukraine did 9-8-10. The American took the lead 5-3. He won the last set 10-10-9 to 9-10-9, and the match 7-3. In the other match, OH had a good start against DAI (29-26) to lead 2-0. As in the previous semifinal, the score moved to 3-1, then 3-3. In the fourth set, OH was perfect with X10-10-X10 to beat DAI’s 9-9-10. In the final set, the archer from Korea was also stronger despite one bad arrow: X10-8-10 to X10-8-8. OH won the match 7-3 and will meet ELLISON in the gold medal final. The bronze medal final will be between HRACHOV and DAI.  
Justina MOSPINEK (POL) vs. JUNG Da So Mi (KOR)
Recurve Women Among the top 8 from qualifications, only Deepika KUMARI (IND) didn’t make it past this round. The young archer lost to Lisa UNRUH (GER) 2-0, 3-3, 4-6. The No. 2 JUNG Dasomi (KOR) trailed Guendalina SARTORI (ITA) 0-2 (26-28) but came back with 29-25, 29-25, 29-24 to win 6-2. 1 KI Bo Bae led Alexandra MIRCA (MDA) 2-0, 4-0, but the archer from Moldova came back to 4-2, 4-4. The Korean won the final set 6-4. Several of the best archers qualified easily with a 6-point advantage: the No. 3 HAN Gyeonghee (KOR), the No. 5 Khatuna LORIG (USA), the No. 6 Natalia VALEEVA (ITA), the No. 7 Justyna MOSPINEK (POL), Victoriya KOVAL and Inna STEPANOVA (RUS). FANG Yuting was defeated by the No. 73 Sabrina STRUYF (BEL) 0-6.   In the 1/8 elimination round, KI and LORIG qualified easily 6-0 against Jennifer NICHOLS (USA) and Nina MYLCHENKO (UKR), respectively. JUNG defeated Victoriya KOVAL 7-3. Three archers qualified with scores of 6-4: Inna STEPANOVA against Sabrina STRUYF, Ren HAYAKAWA against Lisa UNRUH and Justyna MOSPINEK against Elena RICHTER (GER). HAN and PEROVA tied at 5-5. HAN won the shoot-off 9-8.   In the quarterfinals, Inna STEPANOVA faced the leader from qualifications KI Bo Bae. The archers tied at 3-3 after the first two sets. The Russian scored 9-10-10 in the third set, while the Korean managed only 8-10-10. STEPANOVA led 4-2. The Korean recovered two points in the fourth set to tie at 5-5. In the shoot-off, STEPANOVA lost all hopes of a medal by shooting a 7. KI shot a 9 to advance to the semifinals. Two more Korean archers survived their quarterfinal in this category: JUNG defeated MOSPINEK 6-2, and HAN beat Mongolia’s URANTUNGALAG on the same score. HAYAKAWA defeated LORIG 6-0.   Four archers from Asia contested the semifinals. KI easily eliminated HAYAKAWA 6-0. The match between HAN and JUNG was tighter. JUNG started with X10-10-10 to take 2 set points from HAN, who scored 9-10-9. HAN had a bad arrow in the second end (10-7-9), while JUNG scored 9-10-9. She seemed to be on track for a quick victory. However HAN came back with three 10s in the third set to come back at 2-4. The archers tied in the next set with 28 points. The score moved to 5-3 for JUNG before the last set. HAN shot X10-X10-10 in the final set, to beat JUNG’s scores of 9-9-9. The score was tied at 5-5. In the shoot-off, JUNG outscored her compatriot 10 to 9. The bronze medal match will feature HAN and HAYAKAWA, while Korea has already won the gold medal. Will it be JUNG’s or KI’s?
Rodger WILLET Jr. (USA)Compound Men Mike SCHLOESSER (NED), the world record holder of the Cadet FITA Round, met Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) in the 1/16 elimination round. The American led 29-28 but the 17-year-old Dutch archer came back at 58-58, 87-87. In the fourth end, SCHLOESSER shot two lucky arrows just on the 10 line to stay tied with GELLENTHIEN at 117-117. In the final end the American, who was a three times silver medallist at the Antalya World Cup, shot 10-10-9. Shooting last, SCHLOESSER could have won the match with 30 points. However his scores were the same as GELLENTHIEN’s, 10-10-9, to finish in a tie, 146-146. GELLENTHIEN won the shoot-off 10 to 9. SCHLOESSER can console himself with a new Cadet world record at 146 points. Jorge JIMENEZ had a tough match against Duncan BUSBY (GBR). He trailed 29-30, 116-117 but came back in the last end to win the match 146-143. The No. 6 Reo WILDE (USA) started perfectly against Pierre Julien DELOCHE (FRA), leading 90-88 after three ends. He scored 28 points in the fourth end, and another perfect score in the last to win the match 148-147. The No. 7 Majid GHEYDI (IRI) and Seppie CILLIERS (RSA) tied at 30-30 but the South African was too strong for the Iranian and won the match 149-147, scoring the highest total of this round. The leader from qualifications Dominique GENET (FRA), the No. 2 Sergio PAGNI, the No. 3 Martin DAMSBO (DEN) and the No. 4 Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) also advanced to the 1/8 elimination round. Among the top 8, Peter ELZINGA was the only one to be eliminated at this stage.   JIMENEZ easily won his 1/8 elimination match, 146-140. GENET faced WILLETT who shot no less than twelve 10s. The American won 29-28, 59-56, 89-86, 119-116, 147-143. Sergio PAGNI led 56-55, 84-85, 113-112, but Derek JACOBS (AUS) came back in the last end to tie at 142-142. PAGNI survived the shoot-off with a 10 shooting just on the line, while JACOBS shot a 9 just out of the 10 ring. Paul TITSCHER (GER) and Reo WILDE were very close: 29-29, 58-58. WILDE gained one point in the third end to lead 88-87. Both archers then shot only perfect arrows, moving the score to 118-117 and finally 148-147 for WILDE. CILLIERS was the only one to equal WILDE’s great total. He won his match against Magnus CARLSSON (SWE) 59-57, 88-86, 148-143. The match between GELLENTHIEN and HOFER started with both archers winning an end 28-29. They then tied 87-87, 117-117. Following the example of GELLENTHIEN’s previous match, his opponent missed a 10 at the last arrow to win and the archers ended up in a tie at 146-146. GELLENTHIEN won the shoot-off 10-9. Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) and Morten BOE (NOR) were tied at 117-117 before the last end. BOE shot 10-10-9, allowing the archer from Canada to beat him on the last arrow (10-10-10) and win the match 147-146. The match between the defending champion Martin DAMSBO and Amir KAZEMPOOR (IRI) was a very close one. The archers tied at 144-144, and the archer from Iran won the shoot-off X10 to 10.   In the quarterfinals, WILDE was perfect during the first four rounds of his match against KAZEMPOOR (120-118). However he shot 10-9-9 in the last end, allowing his opponent to come back with 10-10-10. The archers tied at 148-148. WILDE lost the shoot-off with a low 9 against a 10 just on the line by KAZEMPOOR. CILLIERS had an easier match against PAGNI, winning 30-28, 60-57, 89-86, 119-115, 148-144. As consistent as ever, WILLETT shot eleven more 10s that put him in good position to win the Longines Prize for Precision. He defeated JIMENEZ 29-29, 59-57, 87-86, 117-115, 145-144. Finally, Dietmar TRILLUS defeated Braden GELLENTHIEN 147-144.   WILLET Jr cruised to a second gold final in a row this afternoon piling up the 10s for the Longines Prize for Precision. He added 14x 10s in his semifinal against TRILLUS to win it 149-146. In the other semifinal, CILLIERS (RSA) also shot very well the whole afternoon. However, “the 9s had to come sometimes” he said at the post match interview. A couple too many indeed, which allowed his opponent KAZEMPOOR to lead all the way: 30-29, 60-58, 89-87, 118-117 and 147-145. KAZEMPOOR is only the 2nd Iranian to reach a gold final in a World Cup after Reza ZAMANINEJAD in Ulsan 2007.  
Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) vs. Natalia AVDEEVA (RUS)
Compound Women In the 1/16 elimination round, the leader from qualifications Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) had a hard time against teammate Natalia AVDEEVA. The world champion won the match 144-139 after tying at 28-28 and again at 85-85. As for the No. 2 Christie COLIN (USA), winner of the Mixed Team in Porec, she lost to D’AGOSTINO (ITA) 143-145. Her compatriot the No. 3 Jamie VAN NATTA (USA) also had a tight match against Ida MOSTERT (RSA). The American was in the lead before the last end, 85-84. She was beaten 140-141 in the end, which means there will be no Americans in the 1/8 elimination round. Laura LONGO (ITA), 3rd last month in Porec, defeated the new Colombian, Maja MARCEN, 142-140. Top archers Camilla SOEMOD (DEN) and Linda OCHOA (MEX) met in a close match: they tied at 27-27 and again at 84-84. SOEMOD finally won 141-140. The No. 5 Parsamehr MAHTAB (IRI) and the No. 6 Marcela TONIOLI (ITA) also qualified for the next round. To the contrary, the two Swedes ranked No. 7 and 8 Malin JOHANSSON and Isabell DANIELSSON were both eliminated.   In the 1/8 elimination round, LOGINOVA and SOEMOD both had easy victories over their opponents. LONGO-MIKALA had a tighter match, tying after three ends 86-86. MIKALA led 114-113 before the last end, but LONGO recovered to tie at 5-5. Both archers shot a 9 in the shoot-off, with LONGO’s called closer to the centre. Iran’s Parsamehr MAHTAB qualified over Lucy HOLDERNESS (GBR) 141-137. Also advancing to the next round were TONIOLI, Ivana BUDEN (CRO), HALIMIANAVVAL (IRI) and Patricia TCHEPIKOFF (FRA). MOSTERT and D’AGOSTINO, who had defeated two favourites in the previous round, didn’t make it this time.   LOGINOVA and SOEMOD contested a very tight match. SOEMOD led 29-28, then 57-56. She suffered a weaker third end (9-9-9). With 10-10-9, LOGINOVA took the lead 85-84. The Russian archer kept her 1-point advantage in the following end, 113-112. She ended the match with a perfect score of 30, while SOEMOD shot 9-10-8. Victory 143-138 to LOGINOVA. In the other matches, MAHTAB defeated LONGO 147-142, HALIMIANAVVAL beat TONIOLI 142-140 and BUDEN beat TCHEPIKOFF 140-135.   Surfing on the wave of success MAHTAB gave the world champion LOGINOVA a lot of trouble. The Iranian started with a perfect 30, compared to 29 points for the Russian. The latter dropped three more points in the second end to trail 56-58. She came back with a perfect 30 on her own on the third to cut the deficit at 86-87. Then both archers scored 29 points in the fourth, 115-116. MAHTAB scored 10-10-9 in the final end, while LOGINOVA scored 10-10 and was the last one to stand on the line to shoot her last arrow. She managed to shoot another 10 to tie the match at 145-145! In the shoot-off, MAHTAB shot a 9. LOGINOVA once again took a long time to shoot. With five seconds left, she also shot a 9, but it was worse than her opponent. MAHTAB will be the first Iranian women in an individual gold match at the World Cup! What a day for I.R. Iran! In the other semifinals, BUDEN took the first advantage (27-26, 57-55, 84-83), but lost it in the fourth end. She trailed 111-112 with three arrows to go. Her opponent HALIMIANAVVAL finished with 9-9-9, opening the door for a come-back from BUDEN.
