Athlete of the Week: Rodger WILLET Jr. (USA)
Lausanne – 14 June 2011
The American compound archer Rodger WILLET Jr. and his fellow countryman Brady ELLISON (recurve) have accomplished an outstanding feat: they won a World Cup stage for the second time in a row! After winning the individual competition in their respective categories in Porec at the beginning of May, they have clinched victory in Antalya one month later. As ELLISON was the World Archery Athlete of the Week after Stage 1, WILLET deserves the same award after Stage 2!
WILLET currently leads the World Ranking list for compound men. He also currently leads the standing for the Longines Prize for Precision 2011. After the first two World Cup stages he has taken a commanding lead on the men's side. Thanks to very impressive performances during match play WILLET piled up 193 tens, about 40 more than his closer trailers, Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA) with 155, Reo WILDE (USA) with 153, and Martin DAMSBO (DEN) with 150.
After tense trials in May for the team that will represent the USA at the World Archery Championships in Turin in July, WILLET was not qualified. He said: "I did not qualify for the team going to the world championships at the US trials. I fully respect our qualification system and I believe there are three great guys from the USA going to the world championships. They are probably the best in the world and I wish them good luck to show it during the competition in Turin." In compound men, Braden GELLENTHIEN, Reo WILDE (reigning world champion) and Jesse BROADWATER will join the U.S. Team.
WILLET can now "focus 100% on the World Cup and I wish to make better than my 3rd place at the Edinburgh Final last year."
