Flash Quotes from Compound Official Practice
Turin – 3 July 2011
Today was practice day for both recurve and compound archers. We asked these three questions during the afternoon session:
- You are part of the biggest World Archery Championship ever. How do you feel about it?
- Did you enjoy the Opening Ceremony?
- Do you feel more confident shooting at 50 metres or do you think you had a better chance to win with the 70m system?
Here are the answers:
Gloria M. ROSA (PUR), Coach
- We had not realised this was such a big event until we arrived at the field. It is good that my athletes can compete with the best archers in the world, even if they are compounds and this event is particularly important for the recurves. I would like to offer my congratulations to the Organising Committee because they are doing a great job. They have been brave to organise both the World Championships and the Para-Archery World Championship and I am sure both will be a success.
- The Opening Ceremony was beautiful, powerful and not too long. As a teacher, I would have liked to have more explanations about the history of Italy but the show was amazing even without explanations.
- I think that the 50m formula is better for the spectators, while the 70m is better for the athletes.
Marcella TONIOLI (ITA)
- Turin is awesome! I hope to do well in both the qualification and the elimination rounds. This competition it is particularly important for me because I am shooting in my own country. I hope that "shooting at home" will bring us good luck!
- The Opening Ceremony was the right union between speed and spectacle. I liked it! M’arco, the mascot, is really beautiful and I enjoyed taking pictures with him. I feel like a child!
- I do prefer the 50m because this is a more challenging distance. I think this new solution has a good level of difficulty. In my opinion, the more difficult it gets, the more challenging it is and to me the more challenging it gets, the more entertaining it is!
Malin JOHANSSON (SWE)
- Well, I did not know this is the biggest championships ever organised! I like the venues.
- Actually we missed the Opening Ceremony because we were traveling at the time. We arrived late, after eleven o’clock but they told me it was an amazing show.
- I think 70m was a better distance. In the 50m round the points are very tight and it is going to be a hard competition. Between the best archers and the others, the fifth and the fifteenth for example, there are just a few points of difference. It is more difficult and more challenging. I prefer the old 70m system.
Martin DAMSBO (DEN)
- So far it was good, but it has just started. It would be better if the hotels were closer and we could keep contact with the archers from other countries.
- The computer effects were nice, good to see. Really good!
- It is different. Practice at 50m is boring, we need to get used to it. I like the 70m distance more. Maybe next year we will get used to 50m and we will like it more.
Fatima AGUDO (ESP)
- I really like being here and I want to do my best. The different venues are a little bit distant but with so many archers this arrangement seems natural to me.
- The Opening Ceremony was brilliant and spectacular. It was a pity we had to wait so much before starting, but as soon as we saw the amazing light show we forgot the tiredness and we understood why we had to wait.
- As a matter of difficulty, there are no differences. I prefer shooting at 70m because I like the long distances. But this is only my personal feeling.
Andrea GALES (GBR)
- This is really the biggest competition I have ever been to. The shooting line is endless. My expectation is to win, of course. I like this place, it is beautiful.
- I enjoyed the Opening Ceremony and I also carried the flag for my country. The part I liked the most is the light show. It was fantastic!
- I do prefer the 70m. While shooting at 50m you only think about not missing the ten. It is not exciting! Instead in the 70m you can concentrate on grouping the arrows. I would prefer the old system.
Vladas SIGAUSKAS (LTU)
- I feel proud, I feel a very pleasant emotion. It will be double pleasure if I win!
- Our car broke down so we didn’t manage to get to the ceremony in time, but we saw the pictures on the web sites and they are beautiful.
- There is no big difference between 50 and 70m for me. Everything depends on the bow tuning. If you work properly with your bow, you can shoot both distances but I want to say that the hit/miss system was more interesting for me. It was more challenging in my opinion. I prefer the old ranking system; where the first eight athletes had to shoot all the eliminations. I do not like it that now they have an advantage because there is no motivation for young archers to continue shooting.
Demir ELMAAGACLI (TUR)
- It is the first event for me to reach my goal. I shot a lot of competitions before this championship. I came here and I want to become the new world champion.
- The ceremony was very nice. The light effects were very interesting but we got a bit tired of waiting before the beginning.
- The target face at 70m is much bigger and easier to shoot but shooting at the 50m target face has to be much more accurate.
Patrizio HOFER (SUI)
- It is nice to be here competing with the best archers in the world. Since we are so many it is normal to wait a little bit longer. I understand it and anyway I only think about the competition and about focusing on what I am doing.
- Since my mother is Italian, I had an idea in my mind about how the ceremony was going to be but in the end it was even better than what I expected. I have never seen anything like that before! After what Korea did for their championships, I know it is difficult to live up to their standards but this has been one of the best ceremonies I have ever seen.
- At 70m the gap between the athletes allowed me to shoot some bad arrows. Now I cannot make mistakes anymore and I have to stay more focused. Before I preferred the 70m, but now I can see the new formula in a positive way, and I like it very much.
