Staying alive
Turin – 7 July 2011
While the top 8 individuals from qualifications could take a well-deserved day-off, the others had to fight through 1/48 and 1/24 eliminations to be allowed to shoot tomorrow. Some big names did not make it in the compound division: Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), Shaun TEASDALTE (NZL), Laura LONGO (ITA) and Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS).
Since this year, the top 8 individuals have the big advantage to be pre-seeded in the 1/16 elimination. Today they could relax a bit while their opponents had to fight through the elimination rounds. In other words, one could not win the world championships today but many strong contenders could lose it. Among them last year’s World Cup finalists Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), Shaun TEASDALE (NZL) as well as Amir KAZENPOOR who reached the final in Antalya last year. On the women’s side, many previous world champions or medallists such as Eugenia SALVI (ITA), Laura LONGO (ITA), Ulrike SJOWALL (SWE), Jorina COETZEE (RSA) and Fatima AGUDO (ESP) were knocked out. Other notables who were eliminated include Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS) and Camilla SOEMOD (DEN).
Compound Men – 1/48 Elimination
The 2008 World Cup runner-up Patrizio HOFER (SUI) was paired against Herian BOCCALI (ITA) in the first elimination round in Turin. After a strong opening for the two archers with 10-10-10 in the first end, the Swiss scored a 6 with his fourth arrow after twitching on this shot. He trailed 55-58 after two ends. With an amazing X10-X10-X10 in the third end, HOFER managed to tie the match at 85-85. As the two competitors scored 29 points each in the following series, the tie remained at 114-114. A final triple 9 for the Swiss was not enough against 9-10-10 by the Italian who clinched victory 143-141.
The highest performance of the round was the work of CHOI Yong Hee (KOR): the Korean archer scored a perfect mark of 150 points against Marko JARVENPAA (FIN). However, with eight X10s, this score does not beat the world record (150/10) set by the Reo WILDE (USA) on 26 June 2011 in a competition in his home country. Needless to say, with such a performance CHOI qualified for the next round in Turin, with a win 150-147 over his opponent for Finland, who also shot strongly. CHOI's teammate, MIN Lihong (KOR), also showed great form in the first round with a total of 149, close to perfection. The Korean beat Vladimir BRADA (CZE) who scored 140.
The head-to-head encounter between Ihor KARDASH (UKR) and Gerardo ALVARADO (MEX) did not reach such heights but was very tense. The two athletes remained tied in the first four ends: 28-28, 57-57, 85-85, and 114-114. In the last end, they both scored 10 and 9, and the tie remained with only one arrow to go… The Ukrainian managed to handle the pressure better and clinched victory with a 9 versus an 8 for his opponent from Mexico (142-141).
The match between Pietro GRECO (ITA) and Anders MALM (SWE) went to a shoot-off to decide the winner (142-142). The tie-break arrow of the Italian was a 10, overtaking a 9 by the Swede. Another match had exactly the same outcome (142-142/10-9): Sander DOLDERMAN (NED) beat Tibor ONDRIK (HUN) in the tie-break. Two other encounters also ended up with a tie; Danzan KHALUDOROV (RUS) defeated David REBEC (SLO) with a 10 closer to the centre (141-141/10*-10); KUNG Lin-Halang (TPE) also had a better tie-break arrow to win his match against Majid GHEYDI (IRI) (144-144/10*-10).
Compound Men – 1/24 Elimination
Seppie CILLIERS (RSA), who finished 3rd at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, was paired against Herian BOCCALI (ITA) in the second round. The two started with perfect ends for a tied score at 30 each. The two archers shot nice groups all the way through, but those of the South African were closer to the centre. In this way he managed to take the lead 59-58 after six arrows and to increase it to 88-86 after nine and 118-115 after twelve. In the last end both CILLIERS and BOCCALI scored the same series, 10-10-X10, and the advantage remained with the former (148-145).
Mike SCHLOESSER (NED) is a young, talented archer. At 17 years old, he holds five cadet world records. In the second round in Turin he had the difficult task of facing his experienced teammate, Peter ELZINGA (NED), European champion in 2004 and well known on the international scene. SCHLOESSER was in the lead after the first three ends, proving the most consistent with three 29-point series (29-28, 58-57, 87-86). He continued on the same pace with 29 again in both the fourth and fifth ends. However, drawing on experience, ELZINGA achieved two perfect last ends to first equal his opponent's score (116-116) and eventually clinch victory (146-145).
Entering the second round after winning a shoot-off, Pietro GRECO (ITA) was up for another one after a tie at 145-145 against Gabriel BADENHORST (RSA) but the tie-break did not smile on him this time. With a 9 the Italian was defeated by the South African with a 10. The match between Gregoire FUMEAUX (SUI) and Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), winner of the World Cup Final in 2007, also ended up with a shoot-off (144-144). The two archers released an accurate 10, but the Swiss arrow was closest to the centre for the win.
Shaun TEASDALE (NZL), who won the Shanghai World Cup Stage last year and qualifier for the Edinburgh World Cup Final where he finished 4th, shot against Marcelo RORIZ Jr. (BRA) in the second round. The Brazilian led by one point after each of the first three ends (29-28, 58-57, 87-86), but his opponent recovered and tied at 115-115 with only one end to go. RORIZ scored 10-10-10 to finish and put pressure on TEASDALE, who with 9-10-10 conceded a surprising defeat.
The 2007 world champion Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN) achieved perfect shooting (150/4) to easily get over Vitor-Hugo FERREIRA (POR), who only scored 139, probably impressed by the shooting and name of his contender. The runner-up of this year's World Cup Stage 2 Amir KAZEMPOOR (IRI) did not have the same success in his second match of the day. Although maintaining a tie before the last end at 118-118 the Iranian shot a poor final end (9-8-7). With only 143 points he was defeated by Jari HAAVISTO (FIN) who shot a strong 147.
Compound Women – 1/48 Elimination
In the first elimination round the 2009 silver medallist Jorina COETZEE (RSA) faced Fatima AGUDO (ESP), 2005 world indoor silver. The Spaniard took a 1-point lead after three arrows (27-26), but her opponent from South Africa changed course to 55-53 for her. The gap doubled to reach 84-80 for COETZEE and increased at 107-113. The South African lady finally won the match on the score of 138-133.
The match between Laura LONGO (ITA), bronze medallist in Ulsan 2009, and Isabel SERNA (COL) was televised live on the Internet. After six arrows the Italian trailed 54-56 and she could not recover (82-86/111-115/140-144) although she shot 29 points in the last end. Victory for the Colombian!
Ekaterina KOROBEYNIKOVA (RUS), team bronze medallist in Ulsan, took an early lead, 29-28 after three arrows over Nataliya BURDEYNA (UKR) in the first round. The competitor from Ukraine turned the score to her advantage, 58-57 after six arrows. In the third end, the situation reversed once again, with the lead going back to the Russian competitor at 85-84. This was the moment chosen by BURDEYNA to release a perfect end (10-10-10) and take back the lead, 114-113. As the two archers scored the same last end of 27 points, the gap remained for a Ukrainian win, 141-140.
Ulrika SJOWALL (SWE) was world champion back in 2001 in Beijing. In her first match she trailed 26-27 after six arrows against Andres WEIHE (GER). Shooting a 29-point second end, the German was in the lead in this match 56-53 after six arrows. The Swede regained one point to trail by two after three ends, 81-83. SJOWALL came back even closer with only three arrows to go at 110-111. In the last end the two ladies started with a 10 and the same gap remained. WEIHE then scored another 10, while SJOWALL shot a 9 for a 2-point lead. With a final 9 versus an 8 for her opponent, the German ensured victory by three, 140-137.
Two matches ended up with a shoot-off. Sherry GALE (AUS) and Ana MENDOZA (VEN) finished at 139 points each. In the tie-break they both shot a 10, but the Venezuelan’s was the closest to the centre and gave her victory. The second shoot-off was to decide between Shabnam SARLAK (IRI) and Saskia KALDAMAE (EST) after a 133-133 match. The Estonian won it with a 9 after her opponent only scored an 8.
Compound Women – 1/24 Elimination
In the second elimination round the reigning European champion and reigning team world champion Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS) faced Isabel SERNA (COL). The match was tied after both three arrows (28-28) and six arrows (57-57). In the third end the Colombian scored a 29-point end to take a 3-point lead at 86-83, but her experienced opponent from Russia came back again to 111-112 with only one end to go. The two started the last end with 9-10, and the Colombian lead remained. The last arrow by BALZHANOVA was a 9, and under pressure SERNA only scored an 8 for a tie at 139-139. However, in the shoot-off the South American athlete regained her self-control to release a 10 that excelled her contender's 8 for victory.
Ivana BUDEN (CRO) was 2nd at the Antalya World Cup last month. She was shooting against Ana MENDOZA (VEN) in the first round in Turin. Although the two competitors remained close all the way through the match, the experienced Croatian was in the lead after each end: 28-27 after three arrows; 55-54 after six; 85-83 after nine; 113-110 after 12; and 141-140 after 15. Despite a beautiful, perfect final end, MENDOZA could not tie the match for one point.
The 25-year old Marcella TONIOLI (ITA) has been shooting very well since the beginning of the competition. She has already reached the mixed team final with her teammate Sergio PAGNI, double World Cup Final winner. In the second individual round in Turin she faced Elena GARCIA (ESP). The Italian was very impressive in this match, achieving the highest score of the compound women's session with 147 out of a possible 150. Her opponent from Spain could only witness the score going from 30-28, 59-56, 89-84, 118-110 to end at 147-137.
YUN Jae Won (KOR), 17 years old, competed in the second elimination round against Maja MARCEN (COL), who has huge experience, having shot on the international scene for many years —she took part in the world championships 2003 in New York. The young Korean scored a 7 in the first end to trail by three points, 26-29. The gap increased to 52-56 and then 79-84. The two ladies scored two 10s and one 9 in the fourth end and the difference remained at 107-112. Beautiful final end for both YUN and MARCEN, with 10-10-9 each, and victory for the Colombian, 141-136!
Individual silver medallist at 2010 European Championships, Gladys WILLEMS (BEL) lost it in the third end of her match against Natalia LONDONO (COL): she scored a 5 for a poor 24-point series and trailed by seven points, 79-86, with six arrows to go. Despite the Belgian competitor shooting 28 and 29 points afterwards, she could not recover completely and lost 136-138.
