Czech Republic wins first gold medal
Turin – 15 July 2011
The compound teams in the open categories shot their eliminations matches up to the bronze medal match, while the W1 category shot for gold. Czech Republic beat the USA to become the first para world champions in Turin!
The matches were decided by 24 arrows with cumulative scores.
Compound Men Team Open
In the 1/8 elimination the No. 3 seeded Czech Republic met No. 14 Ukraine. It was supposed to be an easy match for Czech Republic, but Ukraine proved to be a very strong team starting the match just one point below the best seeded opponent (54-55). After the second end, the match was tied 108-108 but after the third end Czech Republic took the lead again 166-164. The last end started with a low 8 for Czech Republic and Ukraine tried to take advantage of this bad arrow to close in the gap. However Ukraine’s last arrow was only an 8 and they lost the opportunity to recover. The Czechs clinched victory 220-219! A notable match of the first round was the one of Sweden v. Turkey. Turkey was the best seeded team of the match (No. 6, while Sweden was seeded No. 11) but the Swedish team managed to win against the odds. The two teams started the match with a tie (55-55). After the second end Turkey trailed 111-113 points. In the third end Sweden increased the gap by four points (169-165). At the end Sweden won the match 228-223.
In the 1/4 elimination round all the teams proved their high level, scoring high results. One of the most interesting matches of this round was Great Britain (seeded No. 7) against the USA (seeded No. 2). The British archers started leading the match 58-54, but USA immediately caught them up tying the match 113-113. Despite the great efforts of the Americans, HENNEHANE/STUBBS/THOMAS (GBR) won the match 221-216. The match between No. 5 Russia and No. 4 Italy was also a close affair. The two teams started the match with a tie: 57-57. Despite the support of the Italian fans, BENETTI/SCHIEDA/SIMONELLI (ITA) could not keep up with the Russians who secured their victory 225-222.
In the semifinals Korea met Russia in a very close match. The two teams started with a tie (58-58) but the Koreans soon overtook the Russians 115-113. The situation overturned again after the third end, with Korea trailing 169-170. After the last end the two teams seemed unofficially tied 222-222, but the judge decided that an “8 star” was just on the line of the 9-ring to award the victory to Korea, 223-222.
The bronze medal match was very tight. Both Sweden and Russia shot very well, hardly ever missing the gold. Sweden started the match taking the lead 57-56 and was very consistent, never leaving space for Russia to close the gap. At the end, Sweden won the bronze medal, 222-220!
Compound Women Team Open
In the 1/4 elimination round the No. 5 seed Sweden met the No. 4 seed Spain. The best-seeded team, Spain, immediately took the lead 52-48. However in the second end Spain shot a couple of arrows in the red rings and Sweden tied 102-102. The provisional tie in the match seemed to give a boost to the confidence of Sweden. JOHANSSON/NILSSON/REPPE shot another good end to take a 5-point lead over Spain. In the end Sweden controlled the match to win 208-200. The other top three seeds, Russia (No. 1) Great Britain (No. 2) and China (No. 3) easily won their matches.
In the semifinals the Russians ARTAKHINOVA/LYZHNIKOVA/POLEGAEVA easily overtook the Swedish team 215-207. The match between China and Great Britain was quite close even if Great Britain took the lead right from the start 56-52. China managed to prevail in the second end (56-55) but that was not enough to close the gap between the two teams. Great Britain kept the lead up to the end and closed the match 215-212.
Sweden and China met for the bronze medal match. China immediately started by taking a commanding lead against Sweden and did not let anything slip: 58-54, 112-105, 168-157, 221-206. Bronze medal for China!
Compound Men Team W1
With only three Compound W1 men teams qualified, Japan and USA met in the semifinals to decide who was going to shoot against Czech Republic in the gold match. The match started with the Japanese team trailing 47-48 and then the Americans kept increasing their advantage, 99-87, 149-137, 193-175. Japan got some consolation with the bronze medal.
The USA then met Czech Republic in a close gold medal match. The Czechs started the match with 46 points, leaving the Americans behind with 43. The results overturned after the second end with a total of 91 pts for the USA and 90 pts for Czech Republic. Silver medal for the USA, while the Czechs became the 2011 Compound Men Team W1 world champion! The first gold medal awarded at these world championships!
