USA leads qualifications in the five compound categories
Ogden
The archers shot their qualifications matches in the form of a 50m Round. Later this week they will shoot in matches of 5 ends comprised of 3 arrows at 50 metres with cumulative score (Compound Round). The morning session was marked by the domination of the American trio consisting of Braden GELLENTHIEN and the WILDE brothers who took the top three spots. With 10 archers above 700 points – the current leader of the World Cup Rodger WILLET Jr. (USA) shot 701 points for 10th place – the best archers confirmed that they are in great shape here in Ogden: PAGNI (ITA), DELOCHE (FRA), TRILLUS (CAN) and the new world champion Christopher PERKINS (CAN) will be the ones to watch in the elimination rounds. On the women’s side, the scenario is almost identical : 3 archers from the US team are among the top 4. Only Ivana BUDEN from Croatia managed to stop a complete American domination by taking the 3rd spot.
Compound Men
It was no big surprise to find American archers in the top three spots after 36 arrows : Braden GELLENTHIEN took the lead with 355 points, followed by brothers Logan WILDE with the same total, and Reo who shot 354 points. In 5th provisional position was the new world champion Christopher PERKINS (CAN) with 351 points.
The second half followed the same pattern as the first, with the three Americans keeping their lead through the end. On the back half, Italy's Sergio PAGNI came back strong at 355 to finish first for the second 36 arrows, but it was not enough to stop GELLENTHIEN, who shot a combined 707 for the top ranking. He was followed by WILDE brothers Logan and Reo, in 2nd and 3rd with 707 and 706 points, respectively, while PAGNI ended his day in 4th and DELOCHE in 5th place. Team USA's WILLETT, who is defending his number one world ranking this week, finished the qualification round in 10th with 701 points.
Compound Women
On the women’s side, it was recent Hoyt World Open champion Christie COLIN (USA) who was the top shooter on the first half, dropping just nine points for a total of 351. She was followed by Croatia's Ivana BUDEN, with her score of 348, and US teammate Jamie VAN NATTA, who shot a 347. Other notable scores included number one world ranked Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA) with 346 points, and reigning World Champion Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) in 5th with a 342. VAN NATTA came on strong during the second 36 arrows, shooting a category-leading 345, although it was not enough to edge out COLIN. VAN NATTA finished 2nd with a score of 692, while BUDEN dropped to finish 3rd, shooting a 689. ANSCHUTZ ended her day in fourth, scoring a 687, followed very closely by LOGINOVA, in 5th place with the same score.
Compound Men Team
As expected the US team dominated this category with an 18-point lead over Canada (2120 to 2102). France was in 3rd with 2085, thanks to Pierre-Julien DELOCHE and Dominique GENET who both surpassed the 700-point barrier. The Frenchmen were followed closely by Iran (2082), who confirmed that they are now one of the best teams on the international compound circuit.
Compound Women Team
The world champion trio from Turin ANSCHUTZ – COLIN – VAN NATTA totally dominated this category with a 45-point lead over runner-up India (2074-2029). In 3rd was the team from France, comprising the new world silver medallist Pascale LEBECQUE. With 2019 points, the French women (including Joanna CHESSE, pictured above) were just one point ahead of Iran (2018 points).
