Marcella TONIOLI: a rising star in women’s compound archery Lausanne – 9 August 2011
Marcella TONIOLI is a rising star in women’s compound archery. She won the mixed team title at the World Championships in Turin in July, and just won the individual gold medal at the Ogden World Cup last weekend.
Marcella TONIOLI was introduced to archery eight years ago by her P.E. teacher, when she was attending secondary school. “I liked it and I went to watch an archery competition. There I realised that it could be my sport. I always liked the outsider sports.” Marcella started shooting a recurve bow and after five years some girls from her archery club asked her to join them in the compound team. “Now the compound bow is my favourite. When I tried it, it was like a rebirth in my archery career,” she explains.

In her first international competition in 2011, the Indoor European Compound Championships in Cambrils (Spain), the 25-year-old Italian won the individual gold medal, defeating no less than the 2009 Outdoor World Champion Albin LOGINOVA (RUS) in the final.

Competing in her first World Championships in Turin, Marcella faced Korea’s SEO Jung Hee in the 1/16 elimination round. The two started with perfect ends (30-30) and remained tied after six arrows (58-58). The Korean took the lead after the third end (87-86), but Marcella recovered it after the fourth end (114-115) and went on to win the match 143-142. In the 1/8 elimination round, Marcella upset the No. 3 seed Camille BOUFFARD-DEMERS (CAN), and advanced to the quarterfinals against Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA). The American took the lead from the start and went on shooting very well for the victory (30-27, 60-56, 89-85, 117-114, 147-142). TONIOLI was ranked 6th individually and set her personal best during that competition, 147 points in the 15-arrow match, only 2 points short of the world record.
Following her defeat in the individual competition, TONIOLI had the mixed team gold final as consolation. In quarterfinals, paired with Sergio PAGNI, she had set a new world record with 158 points, eclipsing the previous mark by two points (156 also set by Italy at the Antalya World Cup in June 2011).

In the gold medal final Italy faced the Netherlands for the first mixed team world title in archery history. With only a few seconds on the clock, the double World Cup champion Sergio PAGNI released his team's fourth 10 of the first end. The Italian pair led 40-39 and the gap remained the same after the second end (78-77). A perfect third end allowed the Italians to increase their lead to 118-116 with four arrows to go. In the final end both teams shot four 9s and the gap remained the same. The local favourite pair thus won the first mixed team world champion title ever awarded !

Just weeks after the World Championships, Marcella TONIOLI travelled to Utah for the World Cup stage 3, competing in what is her first World Cup season. In Ogden Marcella qualified for two gold medal finals.

In the mixed team category she paired with Sergio PAGNI again. They faced the U.S. team of Braden GELLENTHIEN and Christie COLIN, who were simply too good for Italy that night. The Americans outscored the Italians with a world-record performance : 39-37, 39-37, 40-39, 40-38. Marcella settled for the silver medal but there was more to come for her that night.

TONIOLI came back on the field for the individual gold medal final against the same archer who had eliminated her from the World Championships – Erika ANSCHUTZ. Marcella didn’t let this opportunity go. She capitalized on a weak first start from her opponent to gain a 5-point lead after two ends. ANSCHUTZ was able to come back, narrowing the gap to four points, then two. In the fifth end, she shot three perfect arrows (30) and TONIOLI started with two 9s. The Italian archer needed a final 10 to tie, and she did it! In the shoot-off ANSCHUTZ was up first and shot a 9. TONIOLI managed to shoot closer to the centre – an x10 for her first World Cup gold medal!

“This final was totally stressful! I felt a lot of pressure and also had some issues because of the light, as I could not see the peep anymore, explained TONIOLI. I was not really confident after my opponent shot a 9 in the shoot-off, but I selected my arrow, the number 10, and did not expect anything but a 10 from it.”
