Very high scores in compound eliminations! Legnica (POL) – 25 August 2011   Mike SCHLOESSER (NED) and Christopher PERKINS (CAN) survived shoot-offs, while Clara NIETO TALADRIZ (ESP) broke the world record.  All the individual categories played their elimination matches today until the 1/8 elimination round. The top 8 athletes of each category were pre-seeded in the 1/16 elimination matches, while the others had to go through the 1/48 and 1/24 rounds.   All the compound archers shot matches of 15 arrows (5x3 arrows) with cumulative scoring at 50 metres.   Compound Junior Men The two big favourites, Mike SCHLOESSER (NED) and Christopher PERKINS (CAN) had to go through a shoot-off in the 1/8 elimination round to stay alive in the competition! SCHLOSSER played Petrus MARX (RSA). At first the match seemed easy for the Dutchman as he took the lead 30-29, 59-56, 89-85. However, he dropped some points in the last two ends, scoring 27 and 28 for a total of 144 points. MARX was almost perfect with his last six arrows with ends of 29 and 30 to tie the match at 144! Both archers had to shoot one arrow only in the tie-break. The closest to the centre would win. The South African scored a 9. The flying Dutchman shot a 10 and qualified for tomorrow’s quarterfinals.   The world champion Christopher PERKINS met Jignas CHITTIBOMMA (IND), who won the team bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi last year. PERKINS started strong with three perfect ends (30, 30, 30). However, CHITTIBOMMA did not drop more than a point with 30, 30, 29. The Canadian finished with 29 and 29. The Indian athlete took his opportunity to tie the match with 30 and 29. Superb total scores for both archers with 148 points! In the shoot-off, both archers scored another 10!! However, the arrow of the world champion PERKINS was slightly closer to the centre than CHITTIBOMMA’s, which kept his chance alive at these Youth World Championships.   Another Canadian archer, Michael KUPCHANKO had a good run today. He first beat Rahul CHATTERJEE, teammate of CHITTIBOMMA at the Commonwealth Games last year, 147-142. Then the Canadian took on the No. 8 seed and individual bronze medallist at the last Youth World Championships Ben CLELAND (USA). KUPCHANKO won 149-145, before beating the No. 9 seed Francisco ROJAS (COL) 148-142.   A silver medallist at the Youth Worlds in Ogden 2009, Jean PIZZARO (PUR) shot a tough 1/8 elimination round against the No. 4 seed Jacopo POLIDORI (ITA). The Italian took an early lead, 30-29, which he kept almost all the way through, 59-58, 88-87, 118-116. However POLIDORI finished with 28 points, while PIZZARO scored a perfect 30. LANCE and NICELY are currently team junior world champions! However the newcomer in the team Carli COCHRAN had a close loss to Naomi MARTENS (BEL), 140-141.   Compound Cadet Men World record holder with 149 points in a match, the No. 1 seed Bridger DEATON (USA) fell through in the 1/8 elimination round. His opponent the No. 16 Mario VAVRO (CRO) took an early lead thanks to two perfect ends: 30-29, 60-58. DEATON made up the ground in the third and fourth end: 87-88, 115-115. Then both archers finished with another perfect end and tied the match at 145-145! Finally both were perfect again in the shoot-off, 10-10! VAVRO’s arrow was closer to centre and he upset DEATON!   In another close match, the No. 6 seed Adolfo MEDINA (MEX) battled with the No. 10 Riley WHITING (USA). They both scored the exact same ends during the whole match: 30, 28, 28, 29 and 29! The score was tied at 144-144.
