World Records for VAN NATTA (USA)
Shanghai
All the athletes shot 72 arrows in qualifications this morning, recurve at 70 metres and compound at 50 metres. VAN NATTA set the individual world record at 703 points (out of 720), one more than what she shot in Bloomfield (USA) last spring. Together with Christie COLIN and Diane WATSON, they also broke the team world record with 2095 points. Most importantly, VAN NATTA will be seeded No. 1 for the individual elimination matches tomorrow, which may give her an edge in her run to qualify for the World Cup Final in Istanbul later this month. A high seed, at least a top 8 to be directly pre-seeded in the 1/16 eliminations and have an easier draw of matches, was what all the athletes were looking for today.
Recurve Men
In details, qualifications are shot in two sequences of 36 arrows (6 ends of 6 arrows). In Recurve Men, Brady ELLISON (USA) was the best after 36 arrows with 341 points. He ranked 7th in the second half (with 335), but that was enough to secure the overall top spot with 676 points. XING Yu (CHN) had the same kind of morning (340 and 334 points) to take 2nd place with 674. Following this trend, Luis VELEZ SANCHEZ (MEX) scored 341 points and only 330 points (18th place in the second half) to reach 671 points. He still reached the 3rd place overall. Takaharu FURUKAWA (JPN) also had 671 points (best score of the 2nd half with 339). Laurence GODFREY (GBR), Gael PREVOST (FRA), Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) and the 2009 Shanghai winner CHEN Wenyuan (CHN) completed the top 8. Renowned archers like Jake KAMINSKI (USA), Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) and Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX) just missed out and will need to shoot in the 1/24 elimination round tomorrow.
Key matches for the race to Istanbul
For Thursday’s elimination matches the top of the bracket (1st quarter) is quite crowded. Three archers who need a very good result in Shanghai will meet before the quarterfinals: CHEN, KAMINSKI and Rick VAN DER VEN (NED). They also have the always tough-to-beat CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) in their section and the “survivor” of all these matches should shoot against the No. 1 seed ELLISON in the quarterfinals!
In the second quarter, Laurence GODFREY (GBR) meets one of his teammates (the winner of the Michael PEART – Alan WILLS match) and then he could meet DAI Xiaoxang (CHN), Pedro VIVAS ALCALA (MEX) or FURUKAWA.
In the third quarter of the bracket, VELEZ SANCHEZ, PREVOST, Joe FANCHIN and to some extent Jacob WUKIE (USA) are the athletes in the hunt of a berth for the World Cup Final. To note, PREVOST may shoot against his teammate Jean-Charles VALLADONT in the second round, while fellow Americans FANCHIN and WUKIE may also shoot against each other.
In the fourth quarter, the perennial World Cup finalist Jayanta TALUKDAR (IND) has a lot of work on his plate to get to the Final this time. He needs to beat Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) and Alexander KOZHIN (RUS) or XING Yu (CHN).
Recurve Women
The 42 year-old archery star since 1992, Natalia VALEEVA (ITA), was once more on top of a competition today! She scored 330 and 333 points (2nd in both sequences) to take the 1st overall place with 663 points. The 17 year-old upcoming star and recent junior world champion, Deepika KUMARI (IND), finished 2nd (326+332 for 658). Berengere SCHUH (FRA) took 3rd place with 657 (324 and 333). XU Jing was the best Chinese archer with 656, tied with Khatuna LORIG (USA)—the American had the best start at the first distance with 334 points. Kaori KAWANAKA (JPN), Chekrovolu SWURO and Laishram DEVI (IND) completed the top 8. Alejandra VALENCIA (MEX), FANG Yuting and CHENG Ming (CHN) just missed out.
Key matches for the race to Istanbul
VALEEVA will have three direct opponents that she must overcome in her part of the bracket: Inna STEPANOVA (RUS), Aida ROMAN and VALENCIA (MEX).
In the second quarter of the bracket LORIG and CHENG could provide THE clash of the 1/8 elimination round.
SCHUH and Natalya ERDYNIYEVA (RUS) are the key players in the third quarter. Pia Carmen LIONETTI (ITA) lays in ambush.
KUMARI, Bishindee URANTUNGALAG (MGL), Ren HAYAKAWA (JPN) will battle it out in the last quarter. This quarter also has the new world champion Denisse VAN LAMOEN from Chile, but she would really need a win in Shanghai to have some hope to qualify for Istanbul.
Recurve Men Teams
The USA won the qualifications in five of the six team categories. In men’s teams, ELLISON/FANCHIN/KAMINSKI combined for 1999 points, four more than the Chinese hosts CHEN/DAI/XING. Mexico, who finished 4th in the Turin World Championships, were 3rd in qualifications with 1992, ahead of the world silver medallists France, 1986.
Recurve Women Teams
India was the best in this category. DEVI/KUMARI/SWURO scored 1962 points, ahead of the Chinese representatives CHENG/FANG/XU with 1951. The Italian world champions are 3rd with 1929, slightly ahead of Russia, 1928 and Japan, 1927.
Recurve Mixed Teams
The USA ranked 1st with ELLISON/LORIG who combined for 1332. Who was 2nd? China of course. XING/XU scored 1330, followed by FURUKAWA/KAWANAKA (JPN) and PREVOST/SCHUH (FRA).
Compound Men
Pierre Julien DELOCHE (FRA) was the surprise of the day with 1st place! He scored 353 (2nd) and 355 (1st) for 708 points! Martin DAMSBO (DEN) was actually the best on the first 36 arrows with 356. However he followed up with 351 points. He took 2nd place with 707. World Cup leader Rodger WILLET JR (USA) had 704 points with Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN). The two other Americans, Braden GELLENTHIEN and Reo WILDE, who are fighting for a spot in Istanbul, were locked at 702 points. Stephen CLIFTON (NZL) and Reo’s brother Logan WILDE (USA) had 700. Sergio PAGNI was 9th with 699 points.
Key matches for the race to Istanbul
Although he is seeded No. 1, DELOCHE still has a difficult bracket. He has last year’s Shanghai winner Shaun TEASDALE (NZL), double World Cup Final winner PAGNI (ITA), previous World Cup finalists Patrick COGHLAN (AUS) and Patrizio HOFER (SUI) as well as Logan WILDE (USA) in his part of the draw.
In the second quarter, Roberto HERNANDEZ (ESA) – TRILLUS should be the clash of the 1/8 eliminations. Moreover the winner may meet GELLENTHIEN in the quarterfinal!
Reo WILDE, who is virtually trailing GELLENTHIEN in the ranking, must really look for a victory in Shanghai. He may clash with the current No. 1 in the World Cup ranking WILLET JR. in quarterfinals. The latter should first beat Gerardo ALVARADO (MEX) in the 1/8 eliminations.
In the last quarter, the No. 2 seed DAMSBO has quite an open draw!
Compound Women
VAN NATTA was the best in the first and second sequences of 36 arrows with 350 and 353 points. She broke the world record with 703 points. Fellow Americans WATSON and COLIN followed closely with 698 and 694 points. Then Laura LONGO (ITA) scored 691, one more than Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) and para-athlete Danielle BROWN (GBR).
Key matches for the race to Istanbul
The No. 1 seed VAN NATTA must look for a win in Shanghai to have a chance to qualify for Istanbul. She first needs to overcome other contenders such as Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS), world silver medallist Pascale LEBECQUE (FRA) and Ogden winner Marcella TONIOLI (ITA) in her quarter of the draw. Then in the quarterfinals, her opponent may be the double world champion LOGINOVA (RUS), the FITA Round world record holder Gladys WILLEMS (BEL) or LONGO (ITA), who currently stands in the 2nd place of the World Cup ranking.
COLIN (USA) and BROWN (GBR) are the best archers in the third quarter.
In the bottom part, Linda OCHOA (MEX) will challenge the two Americans Erika ANSCHUTZ and WATSON.
Compound Men Teams
No surprise, the USA is 1st. GELLENTHIEN/WILDE/WILLET JR scored 2108 points, ahead of the young Indian team, 2081, and Australia, 2076.
Compound Women Teams
COLIN/VAN NATTA/WATSON broke the world record combining for 2095 points. The previous record was shot by the American team at the Porec World Cup with 2083 points. In 2nd and 3rd place, Russia and India were very close to one another with 2043 and 2042 points.
Compound Mixed Teams
WILLET JR/VAN NATTA scored 1407 points, ahead of PAGNI/LONGO (ITA), 1390 and DELOCHE/LEBECQUE (FRA), 1385.
