Reo WILDE back in the Final!

Today all the archers competed in their individual matches of the Shanghai World Cup Stage until the semifinals. The compound archers took the field in the afternoon. However, many of them had not only Shanghai in mind. They needed to earn World Cup points to qualify for the World Cup Final in Istanbul. The compound archers shot in the afternoon.   All the compound archers shot matches of 15 arrows (5x3 arrows) with cumulative scoring at 50 metres. In case of a tied match, a one-arrow shoot-off closest to centre was played.  Compound Men Big upset in the 1/16 eliminations! The double World Cup Final Winner in 2009 and 2010 Sergio PAGNI (ITA) lost in his first match against the young Ritul CHATTERJEE (IND). Both archers started with 28 points. Then CHATTERJEE scored 10-10-10 to take the lead 58-57. PAGNI answered with 10-10-10 to tie it at 87-87. CHATTERJEE scored again 10-10-10 to regain the lead at 117-116. Then both archers shot a 10, both archers had a 9 and both finished with a 10. CHATTERJEE upset PAGNI 146-145! In another interesting match, Patrick COGHLAN (AUS) had the perfect start to lead 30-29 over the Shanghai winner of last year Shaun TEASDALE (NZL). Then they were tied at 58-58. In the third end, COGHLAN scored another perfect 30 to take the lead 88-87. However, TEASDALE finished with 10-10-10 and 10-10-10 to tie the match at 147-147. In the shoot-off, COGHLAN scored 10. TEASDALE had X10 to advance to the next round. Another big loss was the one of Roberto HERNANDEZ (ESA) to Guy PHILLIPS (AUS), 144-146. The Salvadorian was eliminated from the race to Istanbul.   The No. 1 seed Pierre Julien DELOCHE (FRA) scored a perfect 150 in the first round. He continued in good fashion in the 1/8 eliminations against TEASDALE. The first end was tied at 29-29, but then DELOCHE took the lead 58-57, 88-84, 117-113 to win 146-143. TEASDALE lost his last hopes to qualify for the World Cup Final, while DELOCHE kept his! With a in over PHILLIPS 145-143, Dietmar TRILLUS locked his place for Istanbul. Reo WILDE and Braden GELLENTHIEN (USA) also kept their chance alive.   Logan WILDE did a favour to many archers when he beat the No. 1 seed DELOCHE. WILDE started with two perfect 30s to take a 1-point lead, 60-59 (despite a 15-minute break in between the two ends due to heavy rain!). He dropped a point in the third end but kept the lead 89-88. Then both WILDE and DELOCHE scored 10-10-10. The French knew that he absolutely needed to win this match to keep his chance for Istanbul alive! However, he could only finish with 9-9-10. That was match by Logan WILDE who won 147-146. TRILLUS did a favour to Reo WILDE by beating Braden GELLENTHIEN. It is to be remembered that TRILLUS eliminated Reo WILDE in a shoot-off last year in Shanghai! Today the TRILLUS-GELLENTHIEN match was tight: 29-29, 59-59, 88-87, 117-117. GELLENTHIEN finished with 8-9-10. TRILLUS scored 9-10-10 to win 146-144. Reo WILDE took care of business himself by handing Rodger WILLET JR his first defeat of the World Cup season to, 147-139. WILDE led all the way and even the 5 of WILLET in the last end did not play any role. In the last quarterfinal, Angel RAMIREZ (MEX) beat Martin DAMSBO (DEN) 30-29, 59-59, 88-88, 118-117, 147-146. However DAMSBO’s quarterfinalist place should give him a berth for Istanbul.   GELLENTHIEN’s loss in quarterfinal gave him the 7th position and 11 points for the World Cup ranking. That meant that Reo WILDE needed to finish in the top 3 in Shanghai in order to qualify for Istanbul. He did not let his chance go and beat RAMIREZ 29-28, 58-56, 87-83, 117-110, 146-138. Reo would however not be joined by his brother in the gold medal match in Shanghai. Logan played a tight match against TRILLUS: 29-28, 58-57, 87-87, 115-115. In the last end, Logan scored 10-10-9. TRILLUS was perfect with 10-10-10 to win 145-144.   Based on the top three results of the four World Cup stages, the top 7 archers (taking in account a maximum of two archers per country) of the season qualify for the Archery World Cup Final in Istanbul. Despite the bronze and gold medal matches in Shanghai on Saturday, no other archer will be able to enter into the current top 7 of today’s Compound Men World Cup Ranking. Only positions within the top 7 may change. The top 7 is: Rodger WILLET JR (USA), Dietmar TRILLUS (CAN), Reo WILDE (USA), Jorge JIMENEZ (ESA), Martin DAMSBO (DEN), Sergio PAGNI (ITA)—despite his loss in the first round here—and Paul TITSCHER (GER). Congratulations athletes!  Compound Women In the 1/16 eliminations, the No. 1 seed Jamie VAN NATTA survived a shoot-off against Farisah ASFARINA (INA). The Indonesian had the lead 28-27, 57-55, 86-84, 114-113. VAN NATTA just managed to come back at 141-141. In the shoot-off, both archers shot a 10 but VAN NATTA was the closest to the centre. In another interesting match, Viktoria BALZHANOVA (RUS) trailed Pascal LEBECQUE (FRA) 26-29 after the first end. Then both archers shot 27 to reach 53-56. Then LEBECQUE shot 9-9-7, while BALZHANOVA scored 9-9-9 to cut the deficit at 80-81. LEBECQUE kept the 1-point advantage at 109-108. However she finished with 10-9-8. BALZHANOVA scored 10-10-9 to clinch the match 137-136.   VAN NATTA kept her chance alive by beating BALZHANOVA in the 1/8 eliminations. Both archers were tied at 85-85, then VAN NATTA made the difference with 10-9-9, while the Russian scored 8-10-7. The American did not let anything go in the last end with 10-10-9 against the 10-9-9 of BALZHANOVA. Victory for VAN NATTA 142-138. Christie COLIN and Diane WATSON also won, meaning the three Americans were still competing for one place. Winner in Ogden, Marcella TONIOLI (ITA) clinched a place for Istanbul thanks to her victory in a shoot-off with Namita YADAV (IRI). The match was tight all the way 28-27, 57-55, 85-84, 113-113, 143-143! In the shoot-off, YADAV scored 8, opening the door for TONIOLI who took it with a 10! The other Italian Laura LONGO had to go through a double shoot-off against Ana CRISANTO (MEX). The first arrow of the shoot-off was exactly on the same spot for both archers! Final score in favour of LONGO 138-138, T9-T9, T10-T8. Anyway, the Italian already had her ticket for Istanbul. The World Cup Final defender, and double world champion, Albina LOGINOVA also booked her place when she beat Gladys WILLEMS 142-134.   VAN NATTA did the best she could! She beat TONIOLI 28-27, 56-56, 85-82, 112-111, 141-140 in the quarterfinals! In the meantime, LONGO scored a strong 146 to defeat the 138 from LOGINOVA. Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA), who is already qualified for Istanbul, did not help her teammate Diane WATSON. ANSCHUTZ won 27-27, 56-54, 85-82, 114-109, 143-137. The para-archer Danielle BROWN is one more time holding her share very well against the abled archer. She beat Christie COLIN despite trailing at the beginning of the match: 27-27, 54-57, 82-85, 111-111, 140-139. However, COLIN’s 139 were better than LOGINOVA’s 138 and WATSON’s 137. This gave her some precious points in the World Cup ranking and booked her place in the World Cup Final. VAN NATTA could not catch her in the ranking anymore!   VAN NATTA and LONGO played a super semifinal: 28-29, 57-58, 84-86, 113-115. Then VAN NATTA shot a perfect last end to tie the match at 143-143. In the shoot-off LONGO scored 10. However VAN NATTA scored an X10! Finally, ANSCHUTZ lifted all uncertainty on the Istanbul qualifiers by putting an end on the hopes of BROWN. The American won 29-26, 57-55, 87-84, 116-113, 146-140!   Based on the top three results of the four World Cup stages, the top 7 archers (taking in account a maximum of two archers per country) of the season qualify for the Archery World Cup Final in Istanbul.
