Bronze medal for Philippines!


  All the categories played their team matches except the gold final today. All the teams shot 4 ends of 6 arrows with cumulative scores. Recurve played at 70 metres, compound at 50 metres.  Recurve Men Team The No. 14 seed Finland took out the No. 3 Mexico, 219-214, while the No. 11 Mongolia eliminated the No. 6 Japan 217-214 in the first round.

In the quarterfinals France, led by an impressive VALLADONT dominated India 57-54 and then 112-109. India shot 9-8-10-10-10-9-10 in the third end, while France had 8-9-10-9-9-9. The teams were now within a point, 166-165 for France. However the French finished strong with 9-10-10-9-9-10 to win the game 223-218. Finland and Mongolia were the surprise teams at this stage of the competition. In this close match Finland had the better hand at the end, winning 52-53, 106-106, 157-158, 213-210. The No. 10 seed Malaysia continued their good run this morning and took out the Chinese hosts, seeded No. 2, 221-219.

In the semifinals the USA was impressive, while France did not have their usual standard. The Americans started with 10-10-10-10-10-9 and 9-10-10-10-9-9. France had only 10-10-8-8-8-5 and 8-7-10-10-9-9. The Americans led 116-102, “game over”. They concluded the match 172-159, 226-215. Malaysia kept on going and defeated Finland 115-107, 168-162 and 222-215.

Finland could not create another upset in the bronze medal match. The silver medallists from the last world championships France won 50-48, 106-100, 160-157, 210-207.
 Recurve Women Team The No. 12 Switzerland beat the No. 5 Japan in the first round 217-215, establishing a new Swiss record! The No. 8 France beat the No. 9 Great Britain 215-209. The match was close after 12 arrows, 106-105. However, France made the difference with 9-10-9-9-9-10 and 8-9-10-8-10-8 in the last two ends to win 215-209.

France led their quarterfinals against India until the third end: 56-54, 110-104, 162-159. However at the end the Indians pulled through the victory 215-214. Italy and the USA also played a tight match. They were equalled at 54-54, and then Italy took a 1-point lead 107-106. In the next end the USA scored 10-9-10-10-9-9 to take the lead, 163-162. However the Americans finished with 7-10-8-9-9-8. The world champions Italy scored 10-10-9-9-9-9 to win the match 218-214.

The Italians kept it steady in the semifinals with 10-9-9-9-9-10, 10-9-9-9-10-10, 9-9-9-8-10-7 and 9-8-9-9-8-10 to lead Mexico all the way. Italy won 218-215. In the other semifinal, India beat Russia 219-212.

For the bronze medal, Mexico dominated Russia from the beginning to the end, 54-50, 107-102, 160-153 and 216-207.
 Compound Men Team Switzerland gave a good fight to Mexico in the compound men quarterfinals, reaching 227 points. In fact, both teams shot only 10s or 9s in this match except for one 7 from Switzerland in the first end. The Swiss scored only 53 points in this end and never recovered from it: Mexico took a 4-point lead and kept it all the way 57-53, 115-111, 173-169, 231-227.

The young and talented team from India built a substantial lead after three ends. They scored 10-10-9-10—10-9 to lead Australia 58-56, then 10-9-10-9-10-10 (116-112) and 10-10-10-10-9-10-9 (174-168). The Australians finished with a perfect 10-10-10-10-10-10, but India won 229-228. In the other semifinal, the favourite USA defeated Mexico 234-225.

Mexico scored a superb 234 points of their own in the bronze medal match. They beat Australia 59-56, 117-114, 175-173 and 234-231.
 Compound Women Team India and Indonesia were tied at 112-112 after 12 arrows. Then India shot a strong 9-10-10-10-9-10 to take the lead 170-166. They did not let the victory go in the last end, 225-219. The Philippines No. 5 created another upset in quarterfinals, beating the No. 4 Mexico 53-53, 111-108, 167-163, 225-220.

The Philippines could not handle the favourite USA in the semifinal. They were tied at 56-56 in the first end, but the Americans then took the lead 114-111, 171-161 and 230-215. In the other semifinal Russia beat India 224-220.

The Philippines started their bronze medal match with scores of 10-9-9-9-10-9 to lead India 56-48. India shot well in the second end with 10-10-10-10-10-9 but still trailed 107-111. Then they trailed 163-165 and didn’t manage to reduce the gap in the last end. Victory 219-217 and bronze medal for the Philippines.

The gold medal matches will be played on Saturday in the Shanghai city centre.
