8 September 2011 - Paralympic Games quota tournament in Stoke Mandeville

Paralympic Games quota tournament in Stoke Mandeville Stoke Mandeville (GBR) – 8 September 2011   At the Para-Archery Stoke Mandeville Open, Thursday, 8 September was dedicated to a Paralympic qualification tournament in order to award Quota places for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.   In total there were 68 places at stake over seven categories for both men and women. The greatest number was for the compound men open with 22 places, then the recurve men W1/W2 with 11 places. All other categories had seven places each.   Because of the need to rank archers well beyond the number of places available, in case any Paralympic National Committees refused their places, a series of mini tournaments took place as the losers of each group as well as the winners shot more matches. For the compound men open this meant ranking people through to 25-32 places.   This is a complex system and one that needs to be simplified before Rio in 2016.   There were many close matches with a number of ties, so keen were the archers to win places for their country. At least two matches went to a second shoot-off arrow, the first being too close to call.   For all the results, click here…   On Friday, there will be the men’s and women’s team events of the Stoke Mandeville Open followed by the bronze and gold medal matches for the World Ranking Event.   Carole HICKS World Archery Communication
