Korean men cruise through at London Archery Classic

  IM, who broke the world record on Monday in the Rankings Round, received a bye to the 1/16 round where he beat WANG Cheng Pang (TPE) 6-0. The other Koreans, OH Jin Hyek and KIM Woojin were also 1/16 winners as they beat Robert LANDSKAUG (NOR) and Rick van den OEVER (NED) 6-2 and 6-0 respectively on a day when many of the archers complained of the cold.   In the Women’s Individual event Carrie WEGH (NED) knocked out Heather KOEHL (USA) in the 1/16 Eliminations while Maja Buskbjerg JAGER (DEN) started her campaign with a 6-2 victory over Nina MYLCHENKO (UKR) at the same stage.   The athletes are shooting their 1/32 and 1/16 invidiual eliminations matches from Thursday to Saturday. The winners of the 1/32 follow up with their 1/16 eliminations. The winners of the 1/16 will come back to Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday and Monday for the individual finals sessions.   In recurve, the matches were shot in the best-of-five sets format. Each set consisted of three arrows and was worth two points; each archer got one point in the case of a tied set. The first archer with six set points won the match. In the case of a tied match at 5-5 in set points, a one-arrow shoot-off was shot. The winner was the archer whose arrow is closest to centre.   Here are some key notes in order of the matches from the Thursday morning session: - The No. 1 seed IM Dong-Hyun (KOR) won his 1/16 match against WANG Cheng Pang (TPE) in three straight sets, 6-0.
- The No. 3 seed Justyna MOSPINEK (POL) beat the recent World Cup Final bronze medallist Berengere SCHUH (FRA) also in three sets, 6-0. MOSPINEK was very constant shooting three times 28 points.
- It was a tough 1/32 match for No. 17 seed CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) against Piotr NOWAK (POL), they tied three sets, but CHENG won the other two (shooting 28 and 27 points) to win the match 7-3.
- The first surprise of the day came from the 1/32 match between No. 49 seed Antti TEKONIEMI (FIN) and No. 16 seed Markyian IVASHKO (UKR), with a 6-4 win for TEKONIEMI.
- Despite a miss on the third set, No. 19 seed Deonne BRIDGER (AUS) won her 1/32 match against Elena YACHNIK (BLR) after a tie-break.
- The No. 17 seed CHENG Chu Sian (MAS) won his 1/16 match against No. 49 seed Antti TEKONIEMI (FIN), in three straight sets, 6-0.
- For her first match, No. 14 seed Kathuna LORIG (USA) faced No. 19 seed Deonne BRIDGER (AUS). This ended by a three sets victory for the American, 6-0.
- The junior silver medallist of the recent world archery youth championships, No. 24 seed Ryan TYACK (AUS) shot his 1/32 match with a challenging wind against No. 41 seed Andres GOMEZ (ESP). TYACK won the first set but GOMEZ was stronger in the wind. The Spanish finally clinched the match 6-2.
- There was a close 1/32 match between No. 22 seed Jing XU (CHN) and No. 43 seed Helena FERNANDEZ (ESP). The Chinese obtained a shoot-off, shooting a perfect 10-10-10 on the last end. Both archers shot an 8, but Jing XU was closest to the center, she took the victory 6-5.
- The 1/16 match between No. 9 seed Hideki KIKUCHI (JPN) and No. 41 seed Andres GOMEZ (ESP), also went to shoot-off. KIKUCHI took the victory shooting a 10 while his opponent shot a 9.
- In the last match of this morning session, No. 22 seed Jing XU (CHN) won her 1/16 match against No. 11 seed LIN Chia-En (TPE), 6-4.   Here are some key notes in order of the matches from the Thursday afternoon session: -      In the last match of this morning session, No. 22 seed Jing XU (CHN) won her 1/16 match against No. 11 seed LIN Chia-En (TPE), 6-4. -      In the first match of the afternoon the young talent Rick VAN DER VEN (NED), silver medallist at the 2009 world archery youth championships, defeated Antonio FERNADEZ (ESP) 6-0 in the 1/32 eliminations. -      One of the favourites, OH Jin Hyek (KOR), dropped a set against Robert LANDSKAUG (NOR) but prevailed 6-2. -      In the first women 1/32 eliminations match Heather KOHL (USA) beat Valentine DE GIULI (SUI) 6-0. -      In the first men 1/16 eliminations match the No. 8 seed OH and world individual silver medallist (and team gold medallist) logically defeated the upcoming VAN DER VEN, 7-1. -      In their 1/16 eliminations KOHL and the No. 6 Carrie WEGH (NED) played a roller-coaster under very changing weather conditions. KOHL led 2-0, then WEGH turned the situation around to lead 4-2. KOHL came back at 4-4. She shot 6 (just out of the 7)-9-9 (24 points) in the fifth set. WEGH had 6-10-9 (25 points) to take the final set and the match, 6-4! -      One of the strongest British hopes, Simon TERRY was defeated by the young Rick VAN DEN OEVER (NED) after five sets, 6-4! -      Two young archers met in the 1/32 eliminations in the women side: Nina MYLCHENKO (UKR) defeated Karina LIPIARSKA (POL) 6-0. -      In the 1/16 eliminations, the silver medallist from the Youth Olympics Games VAN DEN OEVER, 19 years old, could not go pass the double world champion since July KIM Woojin (KOR), who is actually also 19 years old. KIM won 28-26, 27-25, 28-26. -      In the last match of the day, M. B.
