2 February 2012 - Athlete of the Week: Sergio PAGNI (ITA)

Athlete of the Week: Sergio PAGNI (ITA) Lausanne – 2 February 2012  The winner of the 2009 and 2010 World Cup Finals Sergio PAGNI (ITA) is in a good position to win the 2011/2012 Indoor World Cup in the compound category. He won Stage 2 in Nimes late January and is among the favourites to win the Final in Las Vegas.   Sergio PAGNI is famous for being the first archer to win back-to-back Archery World Cup Finals, in Copenhagen 2009 and Edinburgh 2010, both times defeating the great American archer Braden GELLENTHIEN for the gold medal. He was unable to repeat the accomplishment in 2011, when he lost the semifinal to Reo WILDE (USA). PAGNI went on to win the bronze medal.   This season, the Italian ace is on track for a medal at the Indoor World Cup. At the Indoor World Cup Stage 2 / Tournament of Nimes, a much focused and very precise PAGNI won the final 6-2 over Dave COUSINS (USA) for an impressive hat-trick, after 2006 and 2008. He had defeated Braden GELLENTHIEN on his way to the final.   If he shoots well at the final stage of the Indoor World Cup in Las Vegas, Sergio PAGNI will be a contender for the Indoor World Cup Final which will follow later this month.   Biography Extract:  Sergio PAGNI (ITA) – Born on 26 March 1979   1st Individual Indoor World Cup Stage 2 Nimes 2012 3rd Individual World Cup Final Istanbul 2011 2nd Team World Cup Stage 3 Ogden 2011 3rd Individual World Cup Stage 3 Ogden 2011 1st Mixed Team World Championships Turin 2011 2nd Mixed Team World Cup Stage 2 Antalya 2011 3rd Team World Cup Stage 2 Antalya 2011 1st Individual World Cup Final Edinburgh 2010 3rd Team European Championships Rovereto 2010 2nd Individual European Championships Rovereto 2010 2nd Individual World Cup Stage 1 Porec 2010 1st Individual World Cup Final Copenhagen 2009 1st Individual   World Cup Stage 4 Shanghai 2009 2nd Team   World Cup Stage 2 Porec 2009 1st Individual World Cup Stage 2 Porec 2009 4th Individual  World Cup Final Lausanne 2008 1st Team World Cup Stage 3 Antalya 2008 1st Individual World Cup Stage 3 Antalya 2008 1st Individual   World Cup Stage 2 Porec 2008 1st Individual European Indoor Championships Turin 2008 2nd Individual   World University Championships Slovakia 2006 1st Individual Universiades Izmir 2005   Find more information on Sergio PAGNI (and all other archers) at the World Archery website.   World Archery Communication
