The Archery World Cup travels to the Shanghai riverside

For the first time Shanghai hosts the World Cup debut, while it organised already four times the last stage of the season since 2006. Moreover, the athletes are already preparing hard for the Olympic Games and a vast majority of teams took this opportunity to confront themselves at the highest level. As a result, 105 recurve men (24 teams), 90 recurve women (21 teams), 61 compound men (13 teams) and 46 compound women (11 teams) are competing this week in Shanghai. They also form 24 recurve mixed teams and 14 compound mixed teams.   While World Archery is excepting even bigger participation in Antalya (TUR) and Ogden (USA) for the next stages (maybe surpassing 400 archers!), the high amount of athletes in Shanghai required to adapt the qualifications/eliminations field in the Yuan Chen stadium (from the width of the field to the length of the field – see picture).   World Archery and the local organisers are also proud to consistently enhance the competitions by showcasing the events at some of the world’s most spectacular locations. Venue for the finals last year, the River Boulevard in the Pudong area will transform itself again as world class archery venue. For the first time as well in Shanghai, the finals will be hold over two days on 14-15 April. Let’s see in 3D images how this world class venue will be like.  This concept of finals started with the World Championships 2003 in New York Central Park, then at the ancient Panathinaiko Stadium for the Athens 2004 Olympic Games. It continued with the World Cup Final 2006 at the Mayapan Pyramids (MEX) and the 2007 edition in Dubai (UAE). The finals took place on a 70-metre floating platform built on the Madinat Jumeirah Lake with the famous 7-star hotel Burj Al Arab in the background.   Since 2008, this special concept was implemented for all the World Archery events. The World Cup took place in the “Oldest Fort of the New World” in Santo Domingo (DOM). Then the archers stopped by the Marina in Porec (CRO) and they shot on the beach in Antalya (TUR). The more recent locations include the foot of the Rocky Mountains in Ogden (USA), the famous Nyhavn Canal in Copenhagen (DEN), the Gardens of Edinburgh (GBR) and the Asian banks of the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul (TUR). The 2011 world championships in Turin took place in the historic Piazza Castello, and the World Archery Indoor Championships 2012 in Las Vegas took place in the Equestrian Arena of the South Point Casino. Next destinations, Tokyo, Paris and the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London !
