Korean ladies shocked by India in semifinals!

Recurve Men Team – 1/8Six of the eight best teams made the first round without mishap. However, Team USA, ranked 4th in the qualifications and led by the World Cup champion Brady ELLISON, stumbled over the team of the Netherlands (No. 13). Starting with a strong 58 the Dutch took a 5-point lead over the Americans who could not do better than 53 (113-108). The latter could not recover, tying their opponents in the second (55-55) and fourth (56-56) ends and despite the Americans recovering three points (54-51) in the third, the gap was too wide to be filled. Victory for the Netherlands 220-218!   The No. 8 team Spain was tied with No. 9 Ukraine after six arrows at 113 each. The Ukrainians took benefit of a 51-point third end by their opponents to take a 3-point lead (167-164) and maintained a 2-point advantage at the end (223-221). One match was decided in a shoot-off. Great Britain (7) and Malaysia (10) were tied at 223-223 after 24 arrows. In the tiebreak the British totalled 26 points to clinch victory by one point (25 for their opponents).   The highest score of this round in recurve men was shot by the No. 6 seeded team, France, who easily beat Chinese Taipei (11) by nine points, 230-221.   Recurve Men Team – Quarterfinals Three of the four matches were very tight. The closest were India (5) v Netherlands (13) and Great Britain (7) v Italy (2). The Indians and the Dutch were tied after the first (53-53) and the third (160-160) ends. The two teams shot almost equally again in the final end, India with 10-10-10-9-9-9 and Holland with 10-10-9-9-9-8 for an Asian victory by one point (216-215).   The British took a 1-point lead after one end against Italy (55-54) and doubled their advantage at the half-way mark (108-106). The Italians could have caught up with their opponents if Michele FRANGILLI had not scored a 7 to end the third end. The gap remained at 163-161 in favour of Great Britain. The final six arrows allowed Team Italy to recover one point, but this was not enough to recover (216-217).   The best recurve men's team in the world, Korea, was driven into a corner by the team of the Olympic champion from Ukraine Viktor RUBAN. At the end, the Koreans came out the winners but only by two points, 223-221. The fourth quarterfinal was a one-way encounter as France (6) easily beat China (3), 221-214.   Recurve Men Team – Semifinals What a shocker! The No. 1 team in the world, Korea, upset in the semi-final by No. 5 India! The new world record holders for the 70m Round from qualifications, had the best start 57-56 and 58-57 (115-113). However, they found themselves in an unusual situation, losing ground in the second part of the match… India recovered one point in the third end (57-56) and trailed by only one (171-170) with one end to go. While India scored three 10s in their final six arrows for 55 points, Korea did not find the 10-ring at all and scored only 53. Victory for India by one point: 225-224!   The second semi-final was already decided after two ends, as France scored poor ends of 52 and 51 points, while Great Britain had 55 and 54 (103-109). The British also shot 51 in the third end, but with 53 the French could only recover two points (156-160). The final end was tied (54 each) and the gap remained for the Brits! Victory by four, 214-210.   Recurve Women Team – 1/8The world champions from Italy were toppled in the very first round. They were tied with the Germans after one end (54-54). Germany made all the difference in the second with three 10s and three 9s (111-108). Italy came back to one point (164-163) with only one end to go, but they could not catch up completely in the final end and lost by two (217-215).   The No. 13 team, Poland, was close to come up trumps against the No. 4, USA. The Polish ladies led from the first end (55-54) up to the halfway mark (111-109). They were still in the race in the third end but missed the target with the sixth arrow to trail by eight points (155-163). The decision was made and the Americans were victorious 217-209 at the end.   There was a close match between the 2nd seeded team Chinese Taipei against No. 15 Switzerland. The Swiss ladies had the best start with 57 and took a 3-point lead after one end (57-54). The gap increased by one after Switzerland shot 55 and Chinese Taipei 54 in the second end (112-108). The Europeans started to lose some ground in the second half (53-57) and the match was tied at 165-165. Chinese Taipei scored only 53 points to conclude, but their opponents scored three 8s to wrap up the match with a poor 49-point final end. Victory for Chinese Taipei 218-214!   The top seeded team, Korea, scored the best total of the round with 224 points out of 240 to beat Spain (212) easily. The second best score was for another Asian team, China, with 222 against France who completely missed their match with 202! India shot 221 to beat Ukraine (217).   Recurve Women Team – Quarterfinals The best two teams scored 223 points to win their respective quarterfinals: the top seeded team Korea easily beat Russia (8) by 223-215, while Chinese Taipei (2) had an even wider victory 223-210 over India. Seeded No. 6 team, Germany led the No. 3 team China 109-107 halfway through the match, but lost it all with many mistakes in the third end and only 47 points against 53 for their opponents (156-162). Decision was made and the Chinese came out victorious by 214-210.   The fourth match was the tightest and ended up in a shoot-off. Mexico (5) and USA (4) were tied at 54-54 after six arrows. The athletes from Central America then took the benefit of a 6 by their Northern neighbours to take a 5-point lead 109-103 at he halfway mark. As with the USA in the second end, it was Mexico's turn in the third to shoot a 6, but the Americans could only recover one point (160-156). They hit the yellow six times with their final six arrows and this time managed to catch up the score at 212-212. In the shoot-off, however, the ladies from Latin America found the yellow to score 29 points and clinch victory (27 for the U.S. archers).                                                    Recurve Women Team – Semifinals Contrary to what happened on the men's side, the best two teams reached the gold final that will take place on Sunday without difficulties in semifinal. Top seeded, the Korean ladies proved very consistent with 55, 55, 55, and 53 for a victory of 218-206. Their opponents from Mexico (5) had two very bad ends below 50 (48, 53, 49, 56) that prevented them from remaining hopeful…     The match between the No. 2 and No. 3 teams, Chinese Taipei and China, was closer up to the third end (54-53, 107-106, 159-157) and they were only two points apart with one end to go. However, the Chinese lost it all when they shot only 50 to wrap up the match (207) against 55 for their opponents (214).   Compound Men Team – 1/8Two matches of the first round went to a shoot-off. The No. 5 seeded team, Italy was tied by Mexico (12) 225-225. In the shoot-off the Mexicans could only shoot 8-9-9, while the Italians hit the yellow three times (9-10-9). Tiebreak score: 28-26 for Italy! The second shoot-off was between Iran (7) and Germany (10) who were tied at 226 each. Though seeded lower than their opponents, the Germans managed a perfect tiebreak of 30 to clinch victory over the Iranians with 28.   The 4th seeded team, France, stumbled in the very last end of their match against Venezuela (13). The South Americans led 58-57, but the score reversed at the halfway mark, 115-114 in favour of the European representatives. The two teams were then tied at 172-172 with one end to go. The Venezuelans were too strong in the final end with 29 for a victory 231-229.   The favourites, USA, scored the second best total of this round to beat Turkey 235-224. The highest mark was the work of the 2nd seeded team, the Netherlands, when they defeated Norway 236-230.   Compound Men Team – Quarterfinals The top 1 and 2 seeded teams qualified for the semi-finals but things were not easy. The best team, USA, had a perfect start (60-59), and kept their 1-point lead after two ends (119-118) against India. The Americans then let their opponents come back at 174-174 and the final end was to be decisive. It was the very last arrow of the match that proved decisive after the two teams had remained perfect with five 10s each! USA wrapped it up with another 10, while India finished with an 8 (234-232). One can take their hat off to the Indians for a great performance despite the fact that three archers shared two bows, having faced some problems with the third!   Seeded No. 2, the Netherlands were pushed to a shoot-off by the No. 10 team Germany. After they each scored 230 with their regular 24 arrows, they again were tied with 26 each in the tiebreak. However, victory went to the Dutch (8-10-8) who hit the 10-ring, while their opponents did not (8-9-9). In the other matches, Denmark beat Great Britain 231-228, whereas Italy defeated Venezuela 229-225.   Compound Men Team – Semifinals The USA scored 59 points in the first end of their semifinal to take a 2-point lead over Italy. They never lost their advantage in this match, increasing their lead to three points after the third end, and finally four points after all arrows were shot. Final score: 234-230 for the Americans.   The other semi-final was a tight match between Denmark and the Netherlands. Both teams started with 57 points. The Dutch team made the difference in the second end which they won 57-56 but the Danes displayed strong shooting in the third end to tie at 172-172. The two teams both hit the yellow six times to finish, but the Danes had one more 10 than their 2nd seeded opponents and clinched a 229-228 win.   Compound Women Team – 1/8As only eleven teams entered the team competition in compound women, there were only three matches in the first round of eliminations. The encounter between Australia and Great Britain was a close match, but the British made the difference in the first and fourth ends where they scored 57 points each time. The Australians were consistent with 55, 54, 55, and 53 for a 217 total, but this was not enough against the 220 of their opponents.   Another match finished on a 3-point gap. Iran trailed by one point after six arrows (55-56), but they caught Mexico at 110-110 and the tie remained at 167-167. In the final end, the Mexicans shot all their arrows in the yellow ring (five 10s and one 9) to clinch victory 226-223. The third encounter between the local team Turkey and India was a one-way match won by the Indian team 229-216.   Compound Women Team – Quarterfinals The 2nd seeded team of the Russian world champion Albina LOGINOVA went close to defeat against Mexico (7). The Russians trailed by two points, 172-170, with one end to go. However, they managed four 10s and two 9s to conclude the match and clinch a 1-point victory, 228-227. A second match was decided by one point when India (6) upset Italy (3) on the score of 233-232.   After a tie in the first end (56-56), the best compound women's team USA took a 1-point lead against Great Britain (113-112) and then the gap kept increasing (171-168, 230-224). The score of the two last quarterfinalists was a 10-point difference, 224-214, for Germany against France.   Compound Women Team – Semi-finals In this category the best four teams were all present in semi-finals. The top seeded USA shot all but one arrow in the yellow ring (17 10s, 6 9s, and one 8) for the whole match. No. 4 Germany had all but two yellow hits (two 8s), but also more 9s (12) than 10s (10), for a straightforward American victory, 232-223.   As expected, the encounter between the No. 2 and 3 teams, Russia and Italy, was a tighter match. This match was a rematch from Shanghai in April where the two teams also met in semifinal. At that time, the Russians were victorious 227-225. In Antalya today, the Italian ladies took the lead at 58-57, but their opponents reversed the situation at the halfway mark (115-113 in favour of the world champion Albina LOGINOVA and her teammates). Led by the individual winner from Shanghai this year Marcella TONIOLI, the "squadra azzurra" recovered two points in the third end and tied the match at 170-170. The decision was made at the fourth arrow of the final end when one of the Russians scored an 8. With five 10s and one 9 to conclude, Italy got revenge 229-227.   The best Mixed teams will follow in the afternoon for their matches from the 1/8 eliminations to the semi-finals.   Stayed tuned at www.worldarchery.org!   World Archery Communication
