World record for USA in compound mixed team; Mexico and Great Britain take 3rd place

The British team of Duncan BUSBY and Andrea GALES rewarded themselves with 3rd place, beating the German double of Paul TITSCHER and Christina BERGER 143-142. On the recurve side, the Mexican pair of Luis Eduardo VELEZ and Alejandra VALENCIA defeated Romain GIROUILLE and Berengere SCHUH of France 148-147.   Recurve Mixed Team – 1/8The shock came from the match between the pair of Brady ELLISON/Jennifer NICHOLS (USA/2) and the locals Kerem KIRSEVER/Begul LOKLUOGLU (TUR/15). The American favourites appeared as if they had the match in hand taking benefit of a 5 by their opponents in the second end to take a 6-point lead (77-71). However, it was only a mishap for the Turks in this match who showed strong shooting in the three other ends (39, 32, 39, 38). The Americans for their part shot well in the first two ends (38, 39) but had very bad shots in the second half (33, 32). At the end, victory went to the local double, 148-142.   The 4th and 5th seeded teams also fell in the first round. XING Yu/XU Jing (CHN/4) conceded a large defeat, 140-146, against Dmytro HRACHOV/Kateryna PALEKHA (UKR/13). Another Asian double was upset in this round with KUO Cheng Wei/LE Chieh-Ying (TPE/5) losing to Romain GIROUILLE/Berengere SCHUH (FRA/12). All other top seeded mixed doubles went on to quarterfinals.   Recurve Mixed Team – Quarterfinals This time, all of highest ranked mixed teams were victorious in their quarterfinal matches. IM Dong Hyun/LEE Sung Jin (KOR/1) easily prevailed over Laurence GODFREY/Naomi FOLKARD (GBR/8), 150-145. The Italian pair of Mauro NESPOLI and Natalia VALEEVA (3) had an even wider win, 150-144, against Bato TSYNGUEV/Inna STEPANOVA (RUS/11).   The match between the French pair (12) and the Ukrainian double (13) was as close as expected in view of their respective ranking. It was a tie at 36-36 after four arrows, and GIROUILLE/SCHUH gave a 1-point lead to France at 73-72. They increased it to three points at 111-108 with only one end to go. HRACHOV/PALEKHA finished with 37 points and their opponents just managed to keep a 1-point advantage with 35 points (146-145).   After surprising the No. 2 pair USA in the first round, it was more difficult for the Turks in the second against Mexico (7). KIRSEVER/LOKLUOGLU trailed by four points after they shot a 6 in the first end (34-38). Their opponents Luis Eduardo VELEZ/Alejandra VALENCIA added one more to their advantage at the half-way mark (74-69) and then led by seven with four arrows to go (111-104). Despite a perfect final end with four 10s, the local pair woke up too late and lost by three (144-147).   Recurve Men Team – Semi-finals The 1st and 3rd seeded mixed doubles will face each other for the final victory in Antalya on Sunday. IM/LEE of Korea had an easy journey to beat GIROUILLE/SCHUH of France, 155-143. The Asian favourites shot all arrows but the first one (an 8) in the yellow ring in this match.   The second semi-final between Italy and Mexico only remained close in the first end, 38-37 for the European pair, then the gap increased to four points (75-71), seven (113-107) and ended at six (149-143). Victory for Italy!   Recurve Men Team – 3rd Place Match The 3rd place was hardly contested between the No. 7 and 12 mixed teams, Mexico and France. GIROUILLE/SCHUH took the lead after one end 36-35, but shot two 8s with two 10s in the second. Close to being perfect (10, 9, 10, 10), VELEZ/VALENCIA came back and reversed the score at 74-72 in their favour. The Mexican advantage then remained with one end to go (110-108). The French closed the match with 39 points and 147 in total, but their opponents scored 38 to win the smallest margin (148).                                                    Compound Mixed Team – 1/8The match between the No. 1 and the No. 16 seeds was tighter than expected. Reo WILDE/Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA/1) took a 1-point lead after four arrows (39-38) but the Canadian pair of the 2007 world champion Dietmar TRILLUS with Ashley WALLACE reversed the score in the second end with 39-38 to their advantage. The score was a tie at the half-way mark (77-77) and it remained with one end to go (115-115). The Americans wrapped it up with 10-10-10-9 (154), one point better than their opponents with 9-9-10-10 (153).   The Australian double, Michael BROSNAN/Aimee DEAVES (13), upset the No. 4 seeds from the Netherlands, Peter ELZINGA/Inge VAN CASPEL, by 153-150. Another shock was the defeat of the Russians, the world champion Albina LOGINOVA paired with Danzan KHALUDOROV and seeded No. 3. They lost to the Indians Rajat CHAUHAN and Gagandeep KAUR (14) on the score of 152-154.   Compound Mixed Team – Quarterfinals Three encounters were one-way matches in compound and saw the highest seeded teams win. The top seeded double USA defeated Denmark (9), 157-147. Great Britain (5) eliminated Australia (13) by 155-148. And the Italians (2) beat France (7) 154-149.   The last quarterfinal of Paul TITSCHER and the tournament's revelation Christina BERGER (GER/6) against the Indians Rajat CHAUHAN and Gagandeep KAUR (14) remained very close up to the end. The Germans had the benefit of a 1-point lead 38-37 and 77-76 after the first two ends, but their opponents tied the match at 114-114. The tie remained after 16 arrows at 154-154 for a shoot-off where TITSCHER and BERGER were perfect while their contenders scored 9 and 10.   Compound Mixed Team – Semi-finals World record for USA! The previous best mark of 158 was held by Italy since the World Championships in Turin in 2011. WILDE and ANSCHUTZ started with a perfect end (40-37) in their semi-final against Great Britain. The Americans then dropped one point in the second and the gap increased at 79-74. They were perfect again for the whole second half to reach 159 points out of 160! New record for the pair of WILDE/ANSCHUTZ and victory over Duncan BUSBY and Andrea GALES who finished with 151!   The top seeded team and new world record holders from the U.S. will shoot for 1st place on Sunday against the 2nd seed Italy. The 2-time World Cup champion (2009, 2010) Sergio PAGNI paired with the Shanghai 2012 World Cup winner Marcella TONIOLI had to hold steady against the Germans TITSCHER and BERGER. Although the Italians had a 4-point lead before the last end at 118-114, their opponents put pressure with a perfect last four arrows. Experience spoke however and PAGNI/TONIOLI managed a final 38 to maintain a 2-point advantage at the end (156-154).   Compound Men Team – 3rd Place Match The match for 3rd place pitted Great Britain and Germany against one another. The pair of TITSCHER/BERGER took the lead first at 39-38 but scored an 8 in the second end that reversed the situation. At the halfway mark they trailed by two, 77-75 in favour of their Anglo-Saxon opponents BUSBY/GALES. Thanks to a perfect third end the Germans recovered one point and were only one point behind (116-115) with four arrows to go. As the two teams had a tied final end (37 each), the advantage remained on GB's side (143-142).   The competition will end over the weekend on the beautiful Antalya beach with all individual finals for recurve and compound on Saturday afternoon. These will be followed by the men’s and women’s team matches for 1st and 3rd place and the gold medal mixed finals on Sunday.   Stayed tuned at www.worldarchery.org!   World Archery Communication
