Athlete of the Week: Crispin DUENAS (CAN)
Lausanne – 6 June 2012
At Beijing 2008 Olympic Games
The 2008 Olympian Crispin DUENAS won Canada’s only individual men’s spot to the Olympic Games. Later this month in Ogden, he will try to help Canada qualify a full team for London.
Crispin DUENAS is a familiar face on the archery circuit since 2005. He has competed at the last four Outdoor World Championships as well as several World Cup events since 2006 and the Olympic Games in 2008, where he placed 11th with his team. His best individual results were a second place at the Santo Domingo World Cup in 2009, and a second place at the Pan American Games last year in Guadalajara, where he lost the final to the No. 1 recurve archer in the world Brady ELLISON (USA).
At the Canadian Olympic Trials last week in Montreal, Crispin DUENAS placed first, and in doing so grabbed the only men's Olympic spot that Canada has won so far. On that occasion he shot 677 and 662 in the two 70m Rounds. DUENAS has also been the Canadian record holder for the 70m Round since 19 May 2012 with 683.
"I’m going to the 2012 Olympics!!! It was a hard battle but I’ve secured my spot after the 2nd day of trials!" tweeted the archer (you can follow him @crispin_duenas).

Since Canada has only one individual Olympic quota for the men’s competition so far, the team is now preparing to compete at the Final World Team Qualification Tournament that will be held in conjunction with the Ogden World Cup in June (this tournament is open to the countries that did not qualify a full team through the World Archery Championships). The Canadian trio of Crispin DUENAS, Patrick RIVEST-BUNSTER and Jay LYON—who placed in the first three at the Canadian trials—will need to finish among the three best ranked teams in Ogden in order to obtain three quota berths for the London Olympic Games.
