Teams shoot 24 arrows with cumulative score, recurve at 70 metres and compound at 50 metres.  Recurve Men Team – 1/8 The match between USA and Canada was a heated race all the way till the end. USA trailed by one point from the beginning 55-56, 111-112, 167-168. In the last end USA shot three 10s and Canada shot a 10-9-8 to give the US a 2 point lead over the Canadians. The USA shot a 29 to close out the match winning 226-222.   The match between Mexico and Iran was deadlocked at 164 going into the last end. Both Mexico and Iran shot a 29 continuing the tie into the final three arrows. In the final three arrows Iran shot a costly 7 to Mexico’s 9 to give Mexico a two point advantage. The 2 point deficit proved too much for Iran to overcome in the last two arrows. Mexico won the match 219-217.   In the bout between Japan and Mongolia Japan had a 5 point lead after 3 ends leading 164-159. In the final end Mongolia battled back winning the match 217-216.   India and Netherlands met in the 1/8 elimination round they are two of the teams that will compete in this afternoon’s Olympic qualification tournament. India took an early lead and continued to build on it through out the match. India decisively won the match 229 to 221.   Recurve Men Team – Quarterfinals USA once again had a difficult match. They opened the match shooting a respectable 54 points but their opponent, Mongolia, shot 55 for a 1 point lead. In the second end USA came back shooting a 57 to Mongolia’s 53 snatching the lead at 111-108. USA continued to shoot well throughout the match winning 223-215.   Italy started their match against Mexico shooting a 54 to Mexico’s 53. Mexico came back against the Italians shooting a 54 to a 52 to take the lead at 108-107. Mexico continued to build on their lead in the 3rd end shooting a 55 to Italy’s 53 bring the score to 163-160. In the final end Mexico shot 9-7-9-9-8-7 for a 49. Italy shot 10-10-10-10-9-10 for 59 points and an impressive comeback victory. Italy won 219-212.   Recurve Men Team – Semifinals USA and Great Britain faced each other in the semifinals in what proved to be a dominating performance by the Americans. USA shot 56-53 to open the match with a 3 point lead. The scores then went as follows 112-106, 170-164, 225-217. The American simply took the lead early and never let up. USA will shoot in the gold medal match on Sunday.   Italy shot against India for the rights to shoot in the gold medal match. In the opening end Italy shot a 55 to India’s 54. In the second end the teams tied with 54 point bringing the score to 109-108 in the Italians favour. In the third end the Italians opened with 10-10-10-10 but the final two arrows shot by Michele FRANGILLI scored 6-8 for a score of 54. The Indian team shot a 56 to take a one point lead 164-163. In the final end the Italian team shot a 55 but it wasn’t enough to over take the Indian team who shot a 56. India won 220-218 and will face the American team on Sunday in the gold medal match. Italy will shoot against Great Britain on Sunday in the bronze medal match.   Recurve Women Team – 1/8 The women’s team from USA like the men’s team had a difficult first match. They tied their opponent from Kazakhstan in the first end with 51 points. In the second end Kazakhstan took the lead shooting a 54 to USA’s 52 to bring the score to 105-103. In the third end USA shot an impressive 57 points while Kazakhstan had a bad end shooting 8-10-6-10-9-8 for a 51 bring the score to 160-156 in the American’s favour. In the final end USA continued to shoot strong and Kazakhstan continued to struggle shooting a 48 to USA’s 53. USA won the match 213-204.   Turkey met Russia in the 1/8 where Turkey took an early lead shooting 53-51 and 54-51 bring the score to 107-102 after two ends. In the third end Turkey opened the door for Russia shooting a 50. Russia took advantage shooting a 55 to tie the score at 157 points. In the final end Turkey could not recover shooting a 7-9-8-8-8-9 for a 49 to Russia’s 53 giving Russia the win 210-205.   Recurve Women Team – Quarterfinals In the match between Poland and Mexico Poland was dominant through the first three ends. The score was 161-158 going into the final end where Poland slipped and shot a 48. Mexico took advantage shooting an impressive 58 points to secure a victory of 216-209.   In the match between Japan and Germany the Germans took an early 4 point lead shooting a 55 to Japan’s 51. Japan kept it close throughout the match 103-105, 154-155. In the end Germany was able to secure the one point victory 209-210.   Recurve Women Team – Semifinals Mexico faced the team from USA in the semifinals in what proved to be a dominating performance by the Mexican team. Mexico took an early lead shooting a 57 to USA’s 55 for a 2 point lead. In the second end both teams shot 57 points bringing the score to 114-112. In the third end Mexico shot another 57 and USA shot a 54 opening Mexico’s lead to 171-166. In the final end USA shot a 55 but Mexico continued to shoot strong with 58 points bringing the score to 227-221.   In the first end of Germany vs. Russia the German team shot a 54 to Russia’s 52. The Russians made a slight comeback in the 2nd end shooting a 56 to Germany’s 53 giving Russia a 1 point lead (108-107). The 3rd end was the decisive end of the match. Russia took the lead shooting a 57 to Germany’s 54 bringing the match to 165-161. Russia closed out the match shooting a 56. Germany shot a 51 in the final end giving Russia the win 221-212. Russia will face Mexico in the gold medal match on Sunday. Germany will face the USA in the bronze medal match on Sunday.   Compound Men Team – 1/8 Colombia was impressive the in the first round! They scored ends of 57, 60, 59 and 58 to beat Dominican Republic 235-215.   In the other match of the 1/8 eliminations Venezuela defeated Iraq 55-50, 110-103, 167-160, 223-207.   Compound Men Team – Quarterfinals A 235 for Colombia would have been useful for them in this round, as they shot against the USA. Unfortunately for them the Colombians could not repeat their superb performance of the 1/8 eliminations. The USA won 58-55, 117-112, 176-170, 233-227.   The quarterfinal between South Africa and Mexico was a tight one. In fact, they left the yellow only once! South Africa scored 10-10-10-10-9-8, 9-9-9-9-10-9, 10-10-10-9-9-9, 10-10-10-10-10-9 for 228 points. Mexico did slightly better with 10-9-9-10-10-9, 10-9-9-10-10-10, 10-9-10-10-9-9, 9-10-10-9-10-10 for 230 points.   Canada beat Australia and El Salvador prevailed over Venezuela in the two other quarterfinals.   Compound Men Team – Semifinals What a match between Canada and El Salvador. They were tied at 57-57. Then the Canadians shot 10-10-10-9-10-10, while the Salvadorians had 10-8-10-10-9-10. Canada led 116-114. However the Salvadorians then shot a 59 of their own, while the Canadians scored 9-10-9-8-10-10. El Salvador led 173-172. Unfortunately for them they scored another 8 in the last round and that allowed Canada to tie it at 229-229. Shoot-off! El Salvador scored X10-X10-10! Canada scored X10-X10-X10 and one other arrow was literally on the bull’s eye to clinch the match!   In the other semifinal, USA was more consistent than Mexico to win 60-59, 117-114, 175-173, 235-231.  Compound Women Team – Quarterfinals Russia finished strong to beat Canada in a tight match. The Canadians led in the first half (57-57, 113-111). However, they shot 9-10-10-8-9-9 in the third end while the Russians scored 10-10-10-10-10-9 to take the lead 170-166. They did not let go to prevail 226-221.   The USA, Venezuela and Italy also reached the semifinals.   Compound Women Team – Semi-finals Marcella TONIOLLI had strong back pain this morning. She courageously shot with the cheering of her teammate and Italy fought hard despite losing 119-115 after twelve arrows. Thy came back with 10-10-9-10-10-9 to trail Russia only by one point after three ends (173-174). In the last end, Russia scored 9-10-9-10-10-9. Italy gave it all and started with 10-10-10 (and was actually leading at that time!). Then they scored 9-10 and an 8 with their last arrow. It proved to be fatal and Italy lost 230-231.   In the other semifinal, USA beat Venezuela 58-55, 116-110, 172-164 and 228-222.   Stayed tuned at www.worldarchery.org!   World Archery Communication
