Early shocks in individual archery
There were two upsets in the men's 1/32 as NAY MYO AUNG (MYA), ranked No. 363 in the world, beat former European champion and world No. 11 Romain GIROUILLE (FRA) in a shoot-off and Ahmed EL-NEMR (EGY) beat 8th seed Crispin DUENAS (CAN) 6-2.
LE Chien-Ying (TPE) was also a surprise winner in the women's individual 1/32 elimination round when she beat Begul LOKLUOGLU (TUR) 6-0 before going out 6-4 to Carina CHRISTIANSEN (DEN) in the 1/16 elimination round. Men's Individual The biggest smile of the day belonged to Nay Myo AUNG. In the shoot-off against GIROUILLE, both competitors hit a 9 but Nay Myo AUNG was closer to the centre of the target. He was beaten 7-1 in the next round by Markiyan IVASHKO (UKR). EL-NEMR (EGY) then beat DUENAS 6-2. The Canadian is a World Cup medallist and would have expected to win. EL-NEMR could not continue his winning ways, going out 6-2 to KUO Cheng-Wei (TPE). Larry GODFREY (GBR) stepped up to the shooting line and pretended to hit a cricket six before beating Md Emdadul Haque MILON (BAN) 6-0. He did the same after a 7-1 win over Juan Rene SERRANO (MEX). World record holder IM Dong Hyun (KOR) was taken to a fifth set by WANG Cheng-Pang (TPE) and won a wind-affected match 6-4. His first round tie against Emanuele GUIDI (SMR) was less of a contest as IM won 6-0 against a rival who took up the sport four years ago at the age of 38. Colombian Daniel Felipe PINEDA (COL) only discovered he was competing at the London 2012 Olympic Games three weeks before the start of the Games and celebrated by having a tattoo of the Olympic rings on the right arm. He only lasted one round, losing 6-0 in straight sets to WANG Cheng-Pang (TPE). Women's Individual LE whitewashed LOKLUOGLU but was sent packing by CHRISTIANSEN in the 1/16 elimination round. The Dane has shown good form so far at the Games after beating Elisa BARNARD 7-3 in the 1/32 elimination round and making it to the quarterfinals of the team event. Bombayla Devi LAISHRAM (IND) missed the target completely in her 6-2 defeat by Aida ROMAN (MEX) in the 1/16 elimination round. LAISHRAM, who had earlier beaten Evangelia PSARRA (GRE) 6-4 in the 1/32 elimination, recovered to shoot two 10s but the damage had been done. South African Karen HULTZER (RSA) admitted that making her Games debut was more frightening than any of the extreme sports she has tried. Her ordeal was ended quickly in a 6-2 loss to Pia LIONETTI (ITA). LIONETTI recovered from her poor showing in the team event, when she hit a 3, by beating HULTZER and then Miranda LEEK (USA) 6-4 in the 1/16 elimination round.
